No what causes the right amount of RH is the holes in your FC flowing over the water saturated perlite and evaping it into humidity. The perlite needs to be damp, but adding water isnt going to increase your RH unless there is no water. If you follow the directions and build a SGFC the right way RH isnt an issue

Wait the week in the jar or your just gonna wait the week in your FC instead of the jar. Have you calibrated your hygrometer? That could be the reason your RH is only showing 90%. Even if it's 90% there shouldnt be any problems with RH

There should be a dial somewhere on it and what you do is wrap the hygrometer in a wet towel and set that as 100%

I though i saw a jar in the background, seemed random. 7 days is the minimum for pins to show. give it a couple more days. as far as i know u probably didnt consolidate. which would mean you would just have to wait longer. besideds that, if i were u, i would fan more and cut off the extra plastic around the holes on the tub with a knife, it will help let air pass through. it will also help with pinning. Also maybe instead of having squares under your cakes, make them into circles with the circumference of the cake. it will allow more water to evaporate overall in the fc.FAE is where its at. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12416463#12416463

It will actually decrease humidity if you do that and increase the risk of contams from sitting water

I have a jar of water in my fc to try and keep it more humid. Why? Is this a bad idea?

standing water attracts contams so its not a good idea

If your pH meter is reading 90 it could be maxed out. Has it read any higher? You can wrap it in a wet cloth or towel or even a paper towel for 20-30 mins and see if it gets any higher than 90. Whatever it reads will be the max. My best one which a cheap $8 from Home Depot reads 97 as it's max and a more expensive one from Petco reads 87 as it's max.
