Interesting.. what else would you propose? Something like Pholiota curvipes may fit, I suppose. This Mushroom Observer post reminded me of of what Bloodworm has found...

here is another similar florida gym found growing on palm at the same time of year.
Maybe it is one species that grows on palm and other hardwoods or maybe there are several closely related species that grow in the spring in Florida

whatever they are, they fall between G. aeruginosus and G. subearlei on these probable phylogenetic trees

G. subtropicus reportedly grows both on palm and hardwoods, particularly oak.

According to this article, Hesler (1969) reported six wood-rotting Gym species growing from palms...two from Florida; G. subtropicus and G. palmicola.

Here is an old Florida Gym thread that I like.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Good stuff Bob.  I saved that article and believe there's a good chance that it's G. subtropicus!

Here's some that I wish I would've collected...but I had sooo many cubes at the time and I wasn't sure so I didn't...

however, given the opportunity to pick these again...I gladly would.

my guess, even though the tree is rotten is that it is an oak. there are several other oak trees around it and from my limited knowledge on trees the base seems to be an oak.

i'm going to run out now real quick and see if i can snap some more photos.
i'll post them when i return.

thanks everyone.

I'd say it looks like a good match, but seems a little out of territory down there in Florida, no?

fuck. i just got eaten alive by mosquitoes.
regardless, got some more pics.
they aren't the best quality because it was getting pretty dark out there and i was itching and scratching like a madman (the things we do for fungi).
like i said, they are still relatively small patches but are spreading spores and mycelium everywhere.
i was letting them decompose and dry out a little so they dropped as many spores as possible.
i still left a good amount there.

i would imagine the next rain will bring in a nice haul.
hopefully they are active.

thanks again for everyone's input.

peace and love
