The nerve of some people...
    #14317494 - 04/19/11 01:35 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Just a minute ago, some Mexican ladies came to my door wanting to talk to me about the Bible. I answered the door saying "Hi.", and one of the ladies asked me (in Spanish) "Do you speak Spanish?", to which I answered (in Spanish) "A bit.". She then proceeded to tell me some bullcrap, and I stopped her mid-sentence saying "I don't want this.", then she asked me something like "You don't follow the Bible?", to which I responded "I don't want to talk about this, thanks.". Then, with a smile, I said bye and shut the door; to be honest, I got a little angry (but I quickly got over it).

Why do people go door to door doing this? Why do they think it's appropriate to convert people to their way of life? This is extremely childish behavior IMO; "I'm right, you're wrong!" playground nonsense.

I would've actually debated them and showed them how stoopid they are if I was better at Spanish, but alas, I am not.

Stoopid people suck ass.

Why do people go door to door doing this?

To quote our dearly departed Ice, the simple answer is death anxiety.

They think they're making nice-nice with god so when they shrivel up and die, their plane ticket to heaven is prepaid and waiting for them at the will-call window.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

In my experience these people don't seem to do a whole lot of thinking about how they're going to approach the matter.  My first question is usually "why?" and then "how do you/I know?".

We seldom get past that, and it seems to upset them.  I don't even bother anymore- I think we're both happier that way.

Yeahh it can be frustrating. I've found it very difficult to debate with people like this over religion/the existence of this or that. To be honest I sometimes do it to amuse myself. Not to say that i'm right and they are wrong. It's more to prove that NONE of us are right, and that they shouldnt push these kind of things on others. But oftentimes these people are brought up having these ideas ingrained into their very being, and for this reason i hold nothing against them. we are products of our environment, after all right?

Hey as long as they keep their beliefs to themselves, we can be cool :toast:

I think why people do this is because they believe in heaven, so they therefore think well I want to "save" others.
So I think their intentions are good, even though they may be short sighted.
It is extremly annoying, but you get it from all walks of life really.
Ever have a wannabe scientist talk about how science is the best thing in the world and your stupid if you believe in some higher power?
Or ever have someone try to convince you about how right their political party is?
I think that it probaly comes from a place of good intentioned immaturity. A tribal pride. They want you to "join" their tribe.
Anyways.... yah it sux.

If they're really devout Christians, they probably think it's unethical NOT to try to convert you. They're trying to save you from eternal punishment, after all.

It's not that big of an intrusion into your day and they have good intentions. Just be polite. No need for anger.

Funny story-- I was raised christian and trained in Taoism-- I lived in an area where there are a lot of these kind of door to door evangelists who in my experience know little to nothing about the faith they are evangelizing - well my teacher taught me how to be understanding and accepting while I know from my years of hard studying of the Bible that the only true message of the Gospel of Jesus in the New Testament is one of Love any way a long story short

I had one sunday 1. Jehova's witness (mexican) She came to my house first! We were having coffee!!

                2. Morman guys who are white as the snow and already angry at finding a Jehova there before them!

When they got to screaming and shouting at each other in my house while I sat there quietly thinking about how far from the true message these people where I just decided to tell them how much Jesus loves and then I kicked them the fuck out!!

ahh thats normal when people are lost in religion and for the most part week minded. she's doing that to fulfill some gap within herself. when people like that miss the point of what they are preaching its good to always know "she as a person doesnt know any better, and how ridiculous it would be of me to actually believe she could mentally create her own path in life". see, manny people find confort in 'following the way', or 'path', or whatever the fuck you want to call it, they find comfort in sucking the dick of the person pointing the direction instead of actually following it themselves. i think jesus was the shit, i mean he was the man, but do i think he was the son of god? ... does it really even matter what i think! after all jesus was a rare beautiful blossoming flower on this earth, and there have been and will be manny blossoming flowers on this earth. thats something that i should find so awesome it brings joy to me. and if i dont feel that at this moment accept that feeling too, whatever you feel is correct. so she does that cause she does that and what you do is what matters. live the life you mean to preach verbally (me included) and be aware (also knowing you will forget) people are just gonna be dumb... so im gonna go jam out to some tunes and life now. peace.  and my B for preaching, just riding the gravy train like you  :dancer:  :whoo:

In my country, there are always the Amaericans doing the missionary. Fuck, stay off from my country! I have had long talks with mormons. I have noticed the tactic of sending nice men to nice women and nice women to nice men. My friends uncle actually uses a tactic of pulling the two (there is always two) mormon women to bed when they come in and grabbing their asses, with great success, they do not refuse.

Nah, probably not.

At any rate- He's not dead, but he didn't make an public announcement either.  Gather from that what you will.

Yeah, but don't forget the self validation aspect of the death anxiety equation.  If they can get 1 person to join them it reinforces the view point.  Even winning an argument with an old lady sends them through the moon.

Proving your "life" view right is such a big aspect of death anxiety...combine that with swelling the ranks to decrease loneliness and it's easy to see why it becomes so insidious so quickly.

Some people might kill you over a soda, but to put up the really big numbers it has to be a 'way of life" fight.
