Question about my outdoor patch

So I've a few outdoor patches going at the moment. We have had severe storms the past week and they have stayed wet, too wet in fact. So wet that my casing layer (verm+peat) has compacted quite a bit, it is now only 1/2 inch thick.
After 2 days of solid sun, I pushed aside a bit of the casing to see if I could see any pins. I found some- some were normal but a few of them had grown a bit, then started growing back into the ground, upside down. It seemed to me as if the mushrooms were having trouble pushing through the casing layer.
I was thinking about scraping away the existing casing layer and putting down dried grass clippings.
Are the mushrooms having trouble getting to the surface? Did the thin casing get too dry in the past 2 days and they were seeking better conditions so they went upside down?
What do you think?

I think this answer the Q about mushrooms having trouble getting to the surface!

Dont scrape anything...leave it be! If u think its too dry, give it some water...cuz its outdoor growth it doesent mean u cant help a bit!

Your casing layer sounds like it may be too dense and compacted on your substrate. I had a shrooms grow sideways on my outdoor patch -kinda strange. I just put a nice layer of verm down on top of the substrate and then some grass clippings. It worked quite well actually. You can check out my outdoor patch in my signature.
I probably wouldn't fiddle too much with it at this point. If it is really wet, don't water it for a little while. That should help pins reach the surface.

you shouldnt use peat as an outdoor casing layer, especially is you are getting heavy rains. try using straw/hay, it will make a micro climate over the sub without getting overly soggy.

Thanks for the advice all
I ended up lightly scraping off the compacted part of the casing (most of it), careful not to disturb the pins. I then put down some dried grass clippings and watered.
I will start a thread with pics when they poke their heads through the grass clippings
Thanks again
