If you ever wanted a microscope now is the time to get one
    #14315727 - 04/19/11 05:23 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

http://cgi.ebay.com/Beautiful-Vintage-Carl-Zeiss-Microscope-Scientific-Lab-/130508224798?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8562977300509461094#ht_500wt_1156

50 bucks for that is just insane. 4 hours left hopefully it wont get over a hundred.

If I could I'd buy it but the seller only ships to the US.

less than 1 hour left

:zomgwtf: I wish I was in the US so that I could purchase that gem

This would be an exquisite acquisition for all of you aspiring mycologists.

It has no light and needs cleaned.

What is so special about it?  How much do they usually go for?

The fire has many things to teach.
But so does the human experience.. which is like fire, sometimes you just need to stoke the coals and sometimes you just need to add a log or reposition the log matrix. But a well built fire will be much more self-sustaining than a poorly built one, and they all need love to grow. And don't fuck around or your might burn yourself. Must always respect the fire. - Shroomism

But its only 50$. You can stick a LED in the bulb cup and you're set or use a mirror or whatever.

Still 50$ is a damn good price. If you take it appart and sell its individual bits you can make at least 200$

Usually above 200$

Or you can always re-sell it and double your money. This model is one damn good stable piece of lab equipment from the 50s

It looks kinda old and is only a one eye piece, Zies makes the newer white ones that use more tech and have two eye thingys

the case looks cool, whats the big deal tho? being able to look at all your mycelium up close? what else??

Of course I'd go with a new one but they are above 2000$

This is an awesome find for someone with a limited budget as the quaility/price ratio is really high. It looks dirty but its 60 years old piece of equipment. Nothing a little cleaning wont fix.

You can look at spores, basidia, mycelia, nuclei, identify contams and many, many more.

And Zeiss is the norm in optics so

Stains too

Not easy for a noob to clean a scope though. That +$25 dollar shipping, + light, you may be better off getting a new one.

I don't know about the numismatic value of scopes though.

This is what interests me about it.  I probably wouldn't use it much, but a quality microscope for 50 bucks seems like a good deal to me.  I might place a bid or two...

If I bought it, I would write a short script with Albert Hoffman in it and shoot a quick film with him playing with it, seems like the era is correct although he might have had bigger and better equipment, any historians in here?

Well I tried Mellow.  I bid $60, and was winning until the last 3 seconds.  2 bids came in right at the end, and it sold for $76...

Oh well.

Thanks for the heads up anyway!

Funny that you mention this because I watched an old LSD documentary (I think it was Hofmann's potion) where some scientist were using this (or highly similar) model around WWII.

Man I hate when it jumps with 10-20$ in the last second. I wanted to buy a binocular head (2 eyed thingy) and it went from 50 to 80 bucks in less than 5 seconds.

I know!  I was getting pretty excited when there was 10 seconds left, watching the last seconds count down.  Then it got to 3 seconds, and it was like rapidfire bidding, $65-$75-$76-done!  I've wanted a scope for a while now to look at spores from mushrooms I find walking through the woods.  It would have been sweet to have a nice microscope for $60, and the fact that it was 60 years old made it even cooler.  I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer...

I wouldn't sell my scope

Its the same model so thats why I made this thread:

I'm just really satisfied and thought other fellow mycologists would be intrigued

Here are some shots I've made:

B+ spores

Hyphal tip

Basidiospores

And this is perhaps my favourite one. It shows you how the mushroom tissue turns blue where it comes in contact with the trapped air bubble. Pretty neat, huh..

In case anyone is interested take a look at this one. It has the lamp, binocular head, free shipping and its a good brand (Carl Zeiss).

Oh, you will be surprised :datass: All it really takes is the correct eyepiece which is wide-field in this case. And a steady hand of course.

As for the Albert Hofmann script here is what I found:

Its a scene from Hofmann's Potion :yesnod:

If there is one thing that I would recommend that would be to look at chemical crystals while tripping on acid. That induces instant brain implosion of awesomeness:
