i ALWAYS use a layer or two of tyvek (envelopes, house wrap, painters overalls) covered with the sticky part of a fabric bandaid. you can either cover the whole thing with the bandaid, or just make a bandaid frame around it (depending on the size of the hole). my 2 sense.

Alternatevily you could go this route:
The filter material I use is called Ez Felt it is the same material as polyfil only "ironed" out into a mat. Its is autoclavable and has a melting point of 490°f/254°c
Image below is courtesy of Boris

Image courtesy of Best damn jar lids ever...

It can be purchased at fabric and Arts and craft stores.
1 sheet is .99cents and makes 110 +/- 1 U.S Minted Quarter Sized Disks.
that comes out to less than a penny per disk.
I have never had contaminated spawn jar.
Follow the tek linked above or n00bies lid tek and replace the SFD material with the "easy Felt"
If you want to go RR's way then just cut out the material to X mm i'e 90 or 110 or whatever... and do this:
Jar > Lid > Easy Felt > Ring
Image courtesy of best damn jar lids
<--without the tracing
I have done that as well and siliconed the material right to the ring. Image below is courtesy of 13Shrooms

That image explains the micron sizes and shows why a SFD (Synthetic Filter Disk) will always be the better choice Scientifically.
Having said that, in practice and real world use I personally have never! had a contaminated spawn jar While using this material.

Its not glue, it's high temp RTV (room temperature vulcanizer). It turns to temp resistant rubber when it dries in the air and it is in the red tube in the auto section. Thread open, there is no such thing as silicon glue. If you want glue you want epoxy, but I am not sure it would stand the temps the red RTV will.

Epoxy does not with stand autoclaving. At least not the type I have used. I go with the RTV silicone (doesnt matter what color, just saying that so the OP doesnt get hung up on making sure he gets red when any silicone will work as long as its real silicone and not glue).

Here we go again with the EZ-felt just fuckin' with ya I used the ez felt filters u sent me and they worked like a charm. Im the kinda guy where if it's free and it works, i dont give a fuck what it is hahaha Hence all the postal service tyvek I use
I think we should make a thread with all the type of filter material that would work. that way people can check that out as a guide. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands...im goin nuts here, 420 with no 420

O wurd, Dude, everywhere I look in these boxes Im finding lids that I made, Its like I have more lids than jars hahaha. I make all of my lids with injection ports and filters that way I dont have to look for lids when I do innocs, I can just grab any of them. With as many as I have laying around I cant afford the time to sort through all of them to find the right ones

What is the difference between the red and blue RTV? I've been using the blue, just because it perfectly matches my SHIPs... that, and I'm a smurf.

The temp rating on it. Red rtv can withstand more heat than blue. I am a caulker for a living. Just about any silicone will withstand the PC

I just cant believe how diffucult people make a simple concept such as Lids
Its like ...
The teks explain all you need to really know, the fact that lids have been the center of Ation is a concerning trend....
I am reminded of our friend Shot.in.Orbit.....
Its surprising that we had this all figured out back in the days of the mighty Agar and we are still stuck in this lid rut with of course a huge advancement from my EZ felt tek.. (plug?) side from that though it tells me that we here as a community have an epidemic...of
But having said that I personally will help any and all who need a further explanation of the intricacies of Jar lids
I make jokes but I am sympathetic to the stresses of learning myco related stuff it can be an arduous adventure and daunting at times.
Anyone having issues with lids please pm or ask here and lets get you squared away..

I use clear silicone from walmart (the one for doors, windows, baths, blah blah blah). Not saying rtv doesnt work too but, never used it and never had a problem. Just sayin you dont NEED to use just that.
