The Exile Nation Project: full film available & info on screenings and kickstarter 29

Hello Friends!
Nearly in its 40th year, the War on Drugs has cost us trillions of dollars and is perhaps the biggest failed policy this country has ever known. Many of us here, myself included have been directly affected by our nations draconian drug laws and NOW is the time to take a stand and say NO, we will no longer let you put us in cages for non-violent offenses, no longer let your corrupt system disenfranchise us because of a lifestyle choice.
The Exile Nation Project, a film by Charles Shaw, is coming to a city near you! Please check out the website for more details. http://exilenation.org/
Upcoming screenings are May 2nd in Chicago and May 6th in NYC. You can show your support for putting an end to the War on Drugs by attending a screening in your area. If you can’t attend a screening, PLEASE consider donating to our Kickstarter campaign. We are a non-commercial/not-for-profit project funded by a generous grant but we need your help to continue to build our archive of interviews and to have more screenings all over the US & Europe. Even a dollar, ONE DOLLAR, will help us toward our goal. Many of you have expressed a desire to do something about the failed War on Drugs, and by donating to The Exile Nation Project you are helping a project that has the potential to bring the truth of this issue to a larger audience.
You can watch the full film here:
Donate to kickstarter here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/exilenation/the-exile-nation-project-a-film-by-charles-shaw
&
Find out more information about the project here: http://exilenation.org/
If donating money is out of the question for you, but you’d still like to get involved, you might consider “liking” us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Exile-Nation-Project/127131364022016 and spreading the word to your personal network.
If even that is too much, and, if at the end of your life, you never found the time to watch The Exile Nation Project or learn about the War on Drugs, perhaps this three minute poem by John Sinclair (Charles's mentor and friend), sums it all up perfectly, with a beauty unmatched in its time. Oh praise to you great revolutionary soul, who's courage is unrivaled, and who's spirit is pure:
Thanks for reading, I know this post is ridiculously long. Much love to all my brothers and sisters.

Finally, a note from the director:
To all my friends at The Shroomery,
I just wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for all the amazing support Shroomery has provided me and The Exile Nation Project from the very beginning. I am inspired by your community and the depth and breadth of knowledge and consciousness I have seen within it. Some of the very first responses I received a year ago when I put out the call for stories was from this community, and I am proud to say that two prominent "Shroomerites" are actually featured in the first film.
I am also writing to enlist your support in keeping The Exile Nation Project active. We are building an enduring archive of interviews related to the War on Drugs, producing films & videos, and screening our first feature film across the country and around the world. We're also trying to expand the reach of the project by reporting on cases close to the Shroomery community, such as that of our friend Roderick Walker, who is currently serving a life sentence in the Fed for "conspiracy to distribute LSD." We need your help bringing his and other stories to a larger audience.
To keep the project moving forward, please consider pledging to our Kickstarter campaign. Anything you can offer will help: $20, $25. You'd be surprised how far even $10.00 goes towards helping us reach our goal.
Those who give $250 or more will receive a signed copy of the DVD with cover art. This is a very limited release, not available for sale.
If you give $500 or more, you will be listed in the films credits as a thank you for your generous support, and in addition, you'll receive a signed copy of the DVD and an exclusive Exile Nation Project Tee Shirt.
I am always available to hear your story or answer your questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me at cshaw@exilenation.org.
With my deepest respect and appreciation,
______________

The LA screening was last month and about 30 people showed up. The screenings in SF, on the other hand, have been extremely successful and I may have booked us another HUGE screening in SF on June 17th, the 40 year anniversary of the War on Drugs, should know about that sometime this week. But yeah, I doubt we'll be doing another screening in LA any time soon.

Something I am seeing since I've become more and more involved with this project is that everyone is angry but no one wants to do anything. Easier to just ignore and go about business as usual, until it affects you personally, and sometimes not even then.

honestly it's hard to find people who care anywhere. there's this general attitude of "well this SUCKS but what can we do?"
i've been trying to reach out to the burning man community here in NYC for support, because they're a group of educated, open-minded, creative individuals, but would rather concentrate on the next rave and contribute to a cause that affects their community in a very real way.

Charles is already part of Entheon Village @ BM and does lectures on the drug war and his experiences there every year. if you haven't yet you should check out the first part of his book, which is available to dl or read from reality sandwich http://www.realitysandwich.com/blog/1265.
It goes into even further detail of the sordid tale of how and why the drug war was started.
OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB.

Yeah almost missed this, since I only make it to the Pub every so often. The Shroomery is so sprawling now-a-days! I pop over to Mush Cult sometimes just to see what the kids are doing these days and keep up to date
VERY excited to see this later on. Reminded me to e-mail Rudd also, since I've had so much going on, I hadn't made it a priority (bad friend!) - so much appreciated and very glad I saw the thread.
I'm wondering, would it be allowable to distribute flyers, with the free web address so people can watch online, or even to burn free DVD copies at my vending booth to spread awareness at events? I could burn the DVDs and have a spindle full free for the taking...

yogabunny, this is awesome. I haven't watched it yet, but I will tomorrow or Friday when I get a chance.
This community is full of complaints about the drug war, but unfortunately the complainers often seem to wallow as computer chair-locked slactivists. If only people knew how easy it was to become a part of the resistance, and had the motivation to start.
It's really great to see that a fellow Shroomerite has dedicated at least a portion his/her life to actually fighting the horrific drug war. I hope this thread inspires many others to join us and legalize drugs.

Even if you are not a student, you can still join a local SSDP chapter near you! This organization generally welcomes anyone enthusiastic to show up to meetings and events- regardless of age or status. Seriously. Depending on the school's regulations you may not be on the colleges' officer roster, but it doesn't really matter and you'll making a difference by ending prohibition.

thank you!
yes, it's really as easy as copying all the links i posted here and circulating them around your personal networks. when it comes to the war on drugs i see this overwhelming sense of apathy, even with the shroomery community, which is extremely disappointing, but what can ya do??? as someone whose life has been enriched by the use of psychedelic compounds, i see it as my duty and responsible to spread the truth and raise awareness on this issue.
we REALLY can do something here folks. if every person browsing the pub right now donated 10 dollars to our kickstarter campaign we'd be close to 40% funded, and that much closer to being able to bring screenings to smaller cities all over the US. if every shroomery member donated ONE DOLLAR, shit, we'd be able to take this thing all over the WORLD.
Sanho Tree says something toward the end of the film that I find extremely powerful and I can't find it right now, but it's something along the lines of - if you had asked the American public in 1900 if they thought black people or women would ever have equal ("equal") rights, how would they have reacted? 20 & 60 years later respectively we have women's suffrage and the civil rights movement. we are in a great position right now, and i think if we can spread truth and awareness (and of course i think this film is a great vehicle for that) than we can affect some MAJOR change in our lifetimes. I found it! Check it out at 1:56 "The only thing that's inevitable is change"
<chills>
and yeah, soooo many members here are college students, and SSDP are amazing. i am hoping that the NYU & Columbia chapters are going to co-sponsor/host my event in NYC on May 6th and am talking to one of the Associate Directors about a HUGE event in SF this summer.

i was in custody (the drunk tank) for about 11 hours. i am now on diversion felony probation for 12 years. should be eligible for early discharge after i complete half successfully. although, due to the patriot act the arrest will ALWAYS show up on my record, even though there will be no felony convictions once i complete my probation successfully, this thing will follow me around for the rest of my life.

I'm not one to go out to a movie but I like watching them and this seems pretty interesting. I have seen a documentry on no victim prison sentences and it discussed me knowing that you can go to prison for no reason other than enjoying yourself. I have no money to donate, but if you can give me a file I would be more than happy to create a DVD for you to sell for the cause. I think that there would be many people that would love to own a copy and would be willing to pay for it. I also think that this film will aid to the changes in the laws of victimless crimes in the next 10 years. Let me know if my services can assist you in our crusade.

Nice video. I do believe it is very important, however, there are much bigger fights to be sought after in this time. The energy directed towards these things, towards preventing drug policies to change is simply a stray from the direction necessary to keep this Earth in balance.
Thank you for the share nonetheless.

I will talk to charles about this. As I mentioned before we are a Creative Commons, non-commercial/not-for-profit production, so anyone who wants to can make copies of the dvd to give out. i don't know that we'd want to "sell" them per se, but would definitely accept donations in exchange for dvd copies.

Such as? please elaborate, I am very curious what bigger fights you speak of. Also the second sentence doesn't make any sense. We are not trying to prevent drug policies from changing, we are trying to spread awareness so they do indeed change. There are many important issues that need energy, and I think that this for me is where I need to direct mine, and as this is a psychedelic drug forum, I think it's a big issue for the community at large as well.
The ramifications of this 40 year, one trillion dollar social catastrophe are far reaching, and it's not just about, hey man, let me get high in peace. It is about no longer letting the powers that be lead us, through propaganda and half-truths, to live a fear based existence. It's about empowering ourselves and others to make informed decisions, based on truth and knowledge, and not fear.
Can you imagine how much money we'd have to spend on things like health care, scientific research, education, arts, space exploration, if we weren't spending billions of dollars a year on the drug war/prison industrial complex? yes, billons. you can track how much we're spending here:
http://drugsense.org/cms/wodclock
it's sick.
Anyway, thanks everyone for watching, I appreciate the support and comments more than you can imagine!!!

… It’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear wants you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead see all of us as one.
Here’s what we can do to change the world right now, to a better ride:
Take all that money we spent on weapons and defense each year and instead spend it feeding, clothing, and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and WE CAN EXPLORE SPACE, TOGETHER, BOTH INNER AND OUTER, forever … in peace.

YogaBunny, thank you so much for posting this and whatever role you played in the video's production.
I've started drafting letters to my local representatives on numerous occasions only to blow it off. However, while watching the movie today I wrote a page letter to one of my state reps. I'm just waiting on a buddy to proof read it before sending it out. Additionally, I posted a link on my facebook page encouraging everyone to watch it over the Easter weekend.
I really count my blessings that I've never been caught. I realize how much a drug charge, or any charge for that matter can alter the trajectory of one's life. Its an unfortunate thing.
Finally, my work will match 50c on the dollar for financial contributions. I am going to see if they would match a contribution to SSDP, NORML or another reform minded organization. I'll also be donating some amount to the film's website.
PS since you seem to know Charles please pass on my compliments on the film.

Haha, well yes, I am in the film talking about my own arrest and have been doing all the planning, marketing, promotions & PR for the NYC screening, so yeah, I know him a bit. I am definitely going to make sure he reads this thread.
Also, I will say again that it makes me so happy to see people getting inspired and active! Yes! Write your state representatives and keep me posted!

Drug Policy Reform groups are a great cause to support, and if your company does a matching program I hope you will consider supporting our Kickstarter Campaign so that we'll be able to continue to build our archive of interviews (We would like to wind up with 100 to represent the 1 in 100 Americans currently incarcerated) and to continue to hold screenings of the film.
If we reach our Kickstarter goal, I personally will have the opportunity to produce an interview/segment for The Exile Nation Project, a story that is very close to my heart, and that is really the reason I got involved in Drug Policy Reform activism about a year ago. There's a link to the thread about Roderick "Rudd" Walker in the OP if you want to know more, but briefly, he is 7 years into a LIFE (without parole, i believe) sentence for "lsd conspiracy". If you don't know what "conspiracy" is, then watch the film and you will find out through Amy Povah's, and others' stories.

Great movie. I particularly like the guy at the end (2:03). Brought such clarity to the issue. Thanks and I gave $$.

Great movie indeed... thanks so much for posting this! The subject matter, for obvious reasons, hit very close to home and I felt the interview format that let people share their personal real life stories was extremely effective. Very cool.

It already exists in the form of the film you saw and about 50 interviews total, most of which didn't make it into the film. We want to ultimately have 100 total, which would represent the 1 in 100 Americans currently incarcerated.
"If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be a sorry state as are the souls who live under tyranny." — Thomas Jefferson
check us out as a society 200 years later? we're fat, unmotivated, unaware, apathetic, ignorant, uneducated, tv/pop culture junkies, veritable zombies, bodies riddled with disease that is a manifestation as such: obesity, diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol, digestive issues, alcoholism/addiction.
let's stop this madness!!!

Nice catch Shroomgatherer thanks for pointing that one out, my brain missed the italics somehow
Anyway after reading this:
Quote:
I went back to the OP and didn't see the link, but maybe I missed it.
But I went over to Kickstarter and threw in $50 for the project after reading that part, as you all know this is very close to my heart. I wish I could contribute more financially, but you know, for the screenings you're doing in NY, I'd be more than willing to arrange for a donation of pendants. I can send you up a display tray of 25 pendants all labeled and ready to go, and the Exile Nation Project can keep 100% of the proceeds (maybe you/they can mail me back the empty tray when you're done ). Just PM me if they can figure out the logistics at the theaters...maybe just put the tray by the concession stand or whatever...and we'll figure out how to make that happen too. I try to support in any way I can

How exactly do they go about finding these people to interview? my ex boyfriend's mom would probably be perfect for this. she's on felony probation for 75 pounds of marijuana. but it's cuz they dug the plants up and weighed them root and all. She always cracked me up when she'd talk about it. And how out of breath the cops were when they came back in after digging up these 9 9ft plants from her back yard

exactly like this!
what state was this in? they did something simliar to me. there was a vial half full of lsd wash in the car. so first of all it's like....MOSTLY everclear anyway, and second they weighed the whole bottle and said we had 12 grams of lsd. TWELVE GRAMS. I tried to explain to my lawyer how many hits of acid that is once, but he said it basically didn't matter based on how much of the other stuff was in the car.

it was in Texas. I think my ex was charged with under 15 pounds and she got charged with 75
I still have pics of their plants they weren't even really budding yet. So shitty! They totally got booked for around 90 pounds of leaves
12 grams! That's pretty silly. I read the paperwork that they had to fill out when they were both in their NA class and some of it was just a list of a bunch of drugs and what the charges were for it. I didn't even know at that point that they weigh stuff like acid like that. Made me

Meeting with you was really fucking amazing Yes people, she is MORE awesome, gorgeous and cool IRL as she is on here, very funny and great to converse with.
I'm glad I could help you out by making the fliers, don't even sweat it. I'll be sure not only hand them out at school and around school, but also post them up around Manhattan, hand them out at Union Square, and do whatever further grassroots promoting I can do.

As much as I wanted to make the NYC screening the finances aren't there to make the trip. I did however talk a couple of my NYC friends into going in my absence.
How would one go about talking to local theaters about getting a local screening? Here in Columbus there are several small indy theaters around as well as a major campus theater that does at least 1-2 indy movie screenings a month.

I have abstained from watching the movie online because I will be going to see it live tomorrow at the Chicago Premiere. I'm excited to see it. Having read Charles' book by the same name, I am looking forward to seeing how he translates his writing style to the screen.
This is an important subject done, as far as I can tell, in a completely sincere and grassroots way. I'm hoping that Chicago shows everyone how much we love the work that the people involved with Exile Nation are doing by showing up and filling those seats.
Unless I'm mistaken, I think I'm the only one going from the shroomery. At least, the only one that has openly admitted to going to it in this thread.
I won't have internet access until later in the week, Thursday or Friday, but when I get back I will write a review of the movie.

"The only the that's inevitable is change...If I were writing a book about the civil rights movement in the 1940's or 50's, people would have said you're CRAZY; Jim Crow, segregation, that's always gonna be with us. Within a generation you have the Civil Rights Act.....THE ONLY THING THAT'S INEVITABLE IS CHANGE...and sometimes it's for better...and so I think the Drug war is an anomaly, it's a social experiment, and it's coming to an end." ~Sanho Tree, The Exile Nation Project

Just got around to watching this in it's entirety. Very well done. I especially enjoyed the section about healing. I even got a little teary-eyed when the dude was talking about how iboga saved him.
Good work promoting this YB - Keep up the good work. I definitely felt you when you were talking about how you couldn't even begin the conversation with your mother about psychedelics. It sucks. Everyone should post a link to the video on their FB walls.

Just got a chance to finally finish the movie. I'd watched up until 1hr 40 min, but then saved it to watch later...finally got to finish it. Powerful stuff. I'm definitely going to try to burn some copies and pass them out over the summer...

Not sure how the hell I missed this before since I browse The Shroomery on a daily basis, but I'm about to dig in to the film head first and finish it all. YB, thanks for doing what you do. I went to give you a 5'er and realized I had already done so just a week or two ago.
I used to think I was born in the wrong era of time because here I am, having faced the prospect of decades in prison for a non violent crime and yet at the same time I do feel I will live long enough to see this failed social experiment come to a screeching halt. I decided to take the glass-half-full approach and insist we live in exciting times. Change, real change will happen and I am determined to live long enough to see it. Consider the project to be a few dollars richer after I finish watching the film.

I have to go to fucking Far Rockaway to my brother's house. His wife works nights at a hospital and he needs to take care of some shit, so I gotta watch my nephews. I'm sorry that I won't be able to make it yogabunny. I really wanted to show my support there and meet you, and any other shroomerites that might be there (I think sunset mission is the only other one )

So I saw the Chicago premiere of it this past Monday. The film was definitely powerful. As I sat there watching these people wax eloquently on their experiences, I realized, "That person in prison could be anyone of us, at any point in time, for any reason whatsoever." If that thought doesn't motivate you to do something about the drug war, I don't know what will.
Everyone here is going to think I'm kissing YB's ass by saying this but I can't help it: the part I personally related to most was YB's testimonial about how their was this communication barrier between her and her loved ones that she couldn't even begin to breach. I've felt and still feel this exact way. When my parents caught me with some morning glory seeds and some of my 'weird' books, it turned into a conversation that they just couldn't understand. I remember at one point my dad saying, "If you want to feel good or have fun, why don't you just have a beer or two? Why do you have to use drugs?" At that point in the conversation I just shut down and let them finish ranting. It's a hard thing for me to face because I know that psychedelics are going to be a part of my life forever and to have to hide that from the people that are closest to me? God damn, ain't that a bitch.

Yeah I was really thinking that there was no hypocrisy in her reasoning. LSD and Mushrooms are "in line" with a healthy lifestyle; yoga, exercise, eating right. There's no dissonance and those substances are the opposite of poisons...

So I was there yesterday.
The movie was PHENOMENAL. Very eye-opening, very informative, much applause, many laughs, many 's at some of the shit said in it, and dwpineal THANK YOU FOR DONATING THE PENDANTS. I got a sweet LSD pendant with the eagle within the pyramid (though LSA is my favorite over LSD, I'll wear it synonymously) and it would've been awesome if you'd sent in a pendant too! >_<
There was a panel after the movie in which many of the faces in the movie actively answered whatever questions the audience had (it was pretty packed too!)
And yogabunny (who was also in the movie), I am VERY fucking happy that this event was as big a success as it turned out to be, all your hard work paid off! And it was nice seeing you again, wished I could've helped out ALOT more.

As a grown man, I still cannot engage my parents with any fruitful conversation revolving around my psychedelic use either past or present. It's unreal how much damage the drug war and drug war propaganda has done on the older generation. I feel everyone's pain that has this wonderful gift they've been given through their use of psychs and yet they cannot even share it with their closest of kin.

I just recently finished both the book and the movie. If you haven't read the book yet you really need to. His personal experience is one a lot of us can relate to and his description of the psychological affects of being in jail/prison are phenominal.
Reading the book before the movie I had a different idea of what some of the testimonials would focus on. Thought it would be a little harsher on the system and go into a bit more detail in some of the figures. Its really hard to cut it all down to 2 hrs though. Overall a great movie though.
As people have said above yb's story is easy to relate to. My dad partied during the late 70's and 80's, "luud'ing out" every weekend, occassionally doing blow, and of course smoking pot yet he has a problem with my occassional psychedelic usage.
PS: The other Shroomerite on there I noticed did a good job too. I haven't seen him mention anything about it so I won't point him out but just wanted to give him his props as well.

there are a lot of things i want/need to say in response to all of the comments here and about the NYC screening this past friday, but i want to say this first...even if my mom saw that clip of me speaking in the documentary, i think her response would be something sarcastic like "I can't believe after everything you've been through, that you'd say psychedelics were beneficial to you!?"
My arrest experience in just fodder for all the negative feelings she has about psychedelics. feelings that are all based in fear propaganda from the 70's. she may never understand.

it's so frustrating because i feel like i was on the verge of being able to "come out" to them, and now i am just back to square one.

she did send me a really sweet email the day of the event, even though she was/is very opposed to my involvement with the project......

No problem! I love how the community comes together to show support for what we believe in. Wear it in good health . It's funny you mention the DMT pendants, I was looking at what I had sitting out (most everything was packed away for summer tour, so I only had a small selection still out to send), and didn't have a cool DMT one handy
But anyway, I donated 100% of the money from the pendants to the Exile Nation Project, so I'm hoping it generated a few extra bucks for them. Soooooooooo YogaBunny, do we have any accounting on how the pendants did?
And how was the screening? Sunset_Mission says it was a success, so that sounds awesome - updates please

dwpineal - thank you soooooo much for donating the pendants. you are such a bright light in this community and i speak for everyone at exile nation media when i say we appreciate your generosity so deeply.
with that said, unfortunately we did not sell any at the screening.
we did not have nearly as many people in the audience as we expected and fell pretty short of our fundraising goal. if you don't mind, i am going to hang on to them for a bit. my friends have some fundraisers coming up for their burning man art project, and i want to see if they'll let me have space to set up and try to collect donations for the pendants there.
even though we didn't reach our monetary goal for the night, the room was still pretty full and after the film we had an AMAZING Q&A with Daniel Pinchbeck, Michel Negroponte, Dimitri "Mobengo" Mugianis, Julie Holland, Eric Sterling, myself, and Charles. The discussion was starting to get REALLY good when the space started giving us the evil eye and we had to cut it short with at least 3 more questions on deck.
all in all I learned A LOT and am so grateful to have had the opportunity to organize this event and to be part of this project. the message is so important and bigger than us all and it really deserves continued exposure to a wide audience. so, i hope we reach our kickstarter goal and will be able to continue screening the film and building the archive of interviews online.
Christian Parenti was supposed to be on the panel, but had to fly to Pakistan to cover the Osama bin Laden hoopla as soon as the death was announced. His interview is now available to watch in full here:
stay tuned as we continue to release more full interviews. i am especially excited for jean marlowe and sanho tree!!!

This movie is too socialist. When they talk about crime they slmost exclude theft, because they know that they are actually advocating theft. Taxes are theft, any talk of "reducing crime" by "redistributing wealth" is a joke. They are just legitimizing crime and putting the control of it into the hands of politicians.
We should support freedom in all its forms. Freedom to do what we want with our property, including our bodies. How anyone can say that I should have my money stolen from me because someone is too poor to support the child they VOLUNTARILY brought into this world is beyond me. I don't have any kids, because I CAN'T SUPPORT ANY.
The whole foundation of the war on drugs is that "society" somehow has the right to tell us what to do with our property, if you say that they do have that right, except when it comes to drugs, you have no real philosophical foundation and thus no legitimacy.

Also by focusing this documentary on socialists and a socialist outlook you are alienating the individualists. Currently the more individualistic party is the Republicans who are illogically the party that most supports the socialistic idea of "drug prohibition".
Since the Democrats are the more socialistic party and also the party who'se subscribers are more anti-"drug war" your preaching to the choir WHILE alienating the people you SHOULD be preaching to.
I'm both poor and cheap so I'm not donating either way, but if I had money to waste on trying to reform politics I wouldn't be spending it on you guys.

I am going to forward your feedback to Charles, as he will be the best person to respond because he is way more knowledgable about the politics of it all.
We truly do appreciate the negative/constructive feedback as much as the positive, but I'm afraid I do not understand these posts.
The film is about the war on drugs so that's what everyone is focused on talking about. I think everyone in the film has different opinions on the next step beyond full on prohibition but the general message is that the current policies are NOT working, that they must change, and that we should all indeed have freedom over our own selves. you call all the Drug War victims and Drug Policy Reform advocates from the film "socialists", and then call Republican drug war supporters socialists as well. this confuses me.

I was saying that the people in the film, except maybe the guy in the red shirt are advocating redistribution of wealth and talking highly of socialism almost as much as they are talking about the drug war, and this irritates me.
When I mentioned the Republicans I was sort of taking a jab at socialists/ism by saying that advocating the drug war is a socialist policy, in fact its the main one the Republicans ignorantly support.
See if you have the right to take someones money, tell them how to run their business, tell them what to do with their land and also force them to pay their workers an artificially high wage, it isn't that much of a jump to tell them what they can put into their bodies.
The drug war, like all the other programs/ideas that are spoken so highly of by some of the people in that movie, is based on the idea that "society" has the right to interfere with two sane adults interacting with each other voluntarily. I disagree with this premise entirely, but the people in the movie agree with it except for drugs, which isn't really a coherent position.
I think you can either advocate freedom and free ascociation or you can advocate socialism, which involves the government telling you how to live your life, with the drug war as one subset of it. Anything in between is like trying to talk out of both sides of your mouth, its illogical.

and i just don't know how you make the assumption that all the people in the film advocate the government telling us what to do except for the drug war. the topic of the film is the war on drugs so that's naturally what everyone is talking about.

This is suppose to be a constructive thread about the film and talk about the drug war. If you really want to get into a political discussion I think it should be in a new thread. I just think going further into the discussion of politics not related specifically to the drug war take away from the point of this thread.
While I don't agree with him I think I can clarify Hash's point though. In the film they talk a lot about legalizing and taxing the sale of drugs and providing social programs to help addicts, reform the prison system, and help those affected by the drug war which are technically "socialist" views since it is still government regulating our lives. He feels that the people in the movie supporting those things are just as bad as those regulating the legality of drugs because it interferes with individualism. But like I said, that isn't really the point of the movie and deserves another thread to discuss it further. Just my 2 cents though.

Your wrong about the specifics, right about the general idea. I wasn't refering to the taxing although I disagree with it. I was talking about the guy with the short hair rambling on abouth wealth redistribution and other liberal programs which have NOTHING to do with the drug war. Its in the first half of the film.
You are right about the general thrust of my comment, but it seems you all misread or ignored my constructive criticism.
Basically I think that there is too much liberal talk in this and not enough conservative, for lack of better terms. The liberals already think the war on drugs is bad, so its a wasted effort talking to them. This film should focus more on winning over the people who actually support it, the conservatives. My point is that your alienating them by talking about socialistic programs, you should be focusing on things that appeal to them, like the fact that for 2/3rds of America's history drugs were legal.
To be honest I was disappointed and only watched about half of it, so that might play a role here.

yes! a great way to be part of this movement is to post clips of the film or the full film EVERYWHERE. I think even the most conservative, anti-drug person would have a hard time NOT being moved by the stories of Amy Povah, for example, and the guy with MS who died in jail over a bit of cannabis.

I want to thank dwpineal and everyone who has made donations so far!!! we are OH SO CLOSE (1600 away!) with 8 days left.

I am a victim of the drug war, as i had a commercial ganja operation raided a few years back. Im still on probation. I was doing nothing worse than an alcohol, tobacco, or gun manufacturer. I have since used the skill i learned to start a organic farm! i would never have been able to have the wealth of cultivation knowledge i need to run the farm without my past experiences. I am interested in helping the cause as well, but as i am on probation im a little leary about getting out there right now. Besides a donation what can i do to help without have my name/face associated with the cause?
Will there be another showinf in chicago, or one is Madison, WI??? I missed the 1 in chicago, but i think Madison, WI could be a place to hit up due to the majority of Wisconsinites wanting to have medical legalized; its just the politicians (who want to get re-elected so they dont want to risk aproving meds), the medical sector(they loose their job if people find out you can grow your own medicine), and the law enforcement agencies(they just like to power trip i think and busting "drugees" is right up their alley) that are holding meds back. We were so close in WI this year

Hmmmm.....that's kinda tough....you can make an anonymous donation if you'd like? I can't really think of anything else, sorry! We always need help spreading the word virally and by word of mout, so if you can think of any websites or forums that would be interested where you can post anonymously...
we don't have any plans for another chicago screening, or a madison screening, but i will keep madison in mind as a possibility, thank you for the heads up!

This is an absolutely amazing and informative film, I have already shared it with my friends . I can relate to a lot of stuff said in this film. I got arrested for shoplifting, I stole a pair of jeans and a wallet as gifts for friends. Yes this was incredibly stupid, but I was also a heavy drug user, young, broke and wasn't thinking clearly. And honestly did it with the best intentions. Now the ONLY reason I was arrested was because I did not have ID on me. I left my driver's license in my car. The officers asked me my name. I told them I have two names (I legally have two names, I was adopted from a country where they don't legally change names) to the United States where my name was completely changed. They said I was lying. I got charged TWICE for "lying" to two officers. They stuck me in jail for 2 days, straight from the store. I went to court, got a year's worth of probation and drug testing once a week for a year. I was clean for a year, followed everything they said. But now on my record, it says that I was charged for Theft II and False Information given to an officer.
Now I have been working since I was 17, always had a steady good job until I got mixed up with heavy drugs for a couple years and then went to jail. I understand that, I did something wrong, did a year's worth of probation, 2 days in jail and drug testing. But ever since then, it is on my record. I can't get a job anywhere, and I am very qualified. Even though I have straightened my life out, completely changed my ways, got MYSELF off a bad heroin addiction all on my own, it doesn't matter. I still can't get a job, I don't have money to support myself. The punishment doesn't stop. It is honestly absurd. It has been 3 years since I got arrested, and it is still nice and clear on my record. I have gotten interviews for great jobs, and I have about 3 years managerial experience so I know I was qualified for those jobs. But it doesn't matter, my record just puts a nice big stain on my image. There aren't enough jobs in the US, and the jails are spilling over. Now that I have moved back to my home country, it really makes you reflect on how fucked up things really are.

In other words, it is all a vicious cycle. A person is broke, steals, gets arrested, changes their ways, but then can't get a job because of their record. So they are back at square one, wanting to steal because the system has fucked them over.

Or better yet, if you owe the IRS money for taxes (or anyone else for that matter) and they put a lien on your credit... you can't get a decent job. So what are your options to get yourself out of that credit situation and put food on the table?!?!

Karin, thank you for sharing your story, nearly brought tears to my eyes. It's so SO fucked up, all of it. I currently have a job opportunity that I am probably going to have to turn down because of my arrest and record. Pays REALLY nice and I'd be able to save money to pay my fines off in no time, but alas I will probably have to turn it down. It's total bullshit -- I am OVERQUALIFIED for this job.
It is what it is and I will do what I have to to make ends meet but...fuuuuck the war on drugs.
FUCK THE WAR ON DRUGS WE'RE BRINGING IT DOOOOWN.
Did everybody read the report of the global commission????!!!

Example A of the stupidity futility of the "Drug War" and "Drug Policy"
History Channel Cocaine History Between the Lines: This two-hour special goes inside the history of the second most used illicit drug in America. The human appetite for this narcotic goes all the way back to 3000 B.C., when South Americans chewed coca leaves, thinking they were a gift from God. But it wasn’t until 1855, when cocaine was first extracted from the coca leaf and used in powder form that its use spiked. Initially it was utilized as an anesthesia. Soon, famed psychologist Sigmund Freud touted it as an effective cure for depression and impotence. In 1886, John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, added it to his new soft drink: Coca Cola or Coke for short. In 1914, the drug was outlawed, but the damaged had been done. The 70’s ushered in another boost in the drug’s use, fueled in part by new drug cartels in South America. To combat cocaine’s rise, the Reagan administration started the War on Drugs in the 80’s

Anyway after reading this:
Quote:
I try to support in any way I can
Light and Love, DW

So I'm interested in an update on the Rudd project - how goes it?

when charles gets back and settled from burning man, i should have a better answer for you.
as of right now i am connecting rudd with nora at the november coalition (drug war prisoner advocacy group). they want to do what they can to help him get some visibility out here, and we'll go from there when we start back up with TENP.

i have to send your pendants back! we were able to use a few for the project but i really need to pop the rest in the mail for you.
