Is this an Oyster, and if so what type?
    #14307800 - 04/17/11 05:33 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Pretty sure it is an oyster... but it just seems like a strange place??

Also this is located in utah, a bit further north than salt lake, and also was seen yesterday being saturday April 16th 2011

I am thinking it is the Indian Oyster Mushroom, Pleurotus pulmonarius?

Sure looks like some sort of oyster, but an actual ID would be easier if your pictures weren't microscopic.

Most likely Pleurotus ostreatus.

Is there any thing I can do to confirm FOR SURE?
I am making spore prints currently..

Just seems strange since it was a bit darker than others I have seen, and was coming out of wood but was also coming out of the dirt.

Also - can you find any information about the P. ostreatus  being in utah? I cannot...
Not from any good sources at least.

Well a spore print will certainly help. It should be White to lilac in color. Kind of looks like Omphalotus olivascens...

Yeah - so I keep hitting conflicting information.

The indian oyster is said to come out in spring in some places, while the true oyster comes out in the summer and fall more so -- but than I can go to another website and read the exact opposite thing.

Also I found this at an elevation of 4315 feet (1315 m) - which is more so in favor of the indian oyster??
or does it not matter?

I think this image here looks a ton like it:

It's not odd to find mushrooms growing out of season, happens alot. Nicknames like indian oyster doesn't help much either considering people have alot of different nicknames for the same mushroom.
