Unlike cars and electronics, bike technology moves very slowly, but still depreciates.

I'd look for high(er)-end bike that's about 10 years old.

I have pretty much this exact model that I got as a graduation present in 2001.  It retailed at like $1500.

It just went on ebay for $255.  http://cgi.ebay.com/GT-Idrive-3-0-Medium-One-last-made-USA-/190521961792?pt=Mountain_Bikes&hash=item2c5bfe6d40

Go to your local bike shop and see if they can help.  If you really get into it, you can upgrade some of the major components in the future.

I'd go for a hybrid bike personally.
Light and fast on streets, but it can take light trails.

As for the used bike recommendation, I'd steer clear of a bike that is more than a few years old.
Parts break on bikes. You will have to replace them. Be very wary of used bikes IMO.

I'd check out the Forge Sawback 5xx. Entry level hardtail with decent specs for around $400.
You'll have to learn how to work on it yourself or take it in for service though.

If you want to spend a little more at the local bike shop, I can give you more recommendations.

I have a Haro Flightline that cost me about 300 bucks and is fucking awesome.

Light as a feather, tough as nails.

I love this bike.  By far my favorite bike I've ever owned.

Haro makes great bikes, but disc brakes are a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, I don't really get into bike technology.

I live in an area infested with hipsters who think I'm nuts for not riding a fixie.

So, I'm like, whatever.

The Haro I have is the first bike I've had in probably ten years.  I just walked into the local bike shop and asked for something reasonable in price that I wouldn't have to fuck with much.

Just a recommendation.  I don't ride on any hardcore trails, just along the river and lake here and some local bike paths.  That said, I've never run into any problems with the brakes at all.

Beach cruisers are comfy smooth rides but seeing how you want to go trailing with it I suggest a full suspension MT. bike. Although they can be a bit expensive you could probably find a cheap one on ebay/craigslist.

He always had a stupid smile on his face, too, it was hilarious.

I haven't seen him in years, I wonder what happened to him; maybe he got in an accident or something.

Going over 400$ is kinda pushing it for me.  Thats abouth the most i'd like to pay.  I dont really know the difference between hardtail, dual shock, and all the other jargon that comes with biking.  I obviously need to do more research. Thanks alot for the suggestions.
