The Ultimate Question
    #14311660 - 04/18/11 12:13 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

A scientist offers you the opportunity to be put in an isolation tank and live out a perfect life inside your mind.

The chance to live the rest of your life in a virtual reality.

No limits to anything. You explain your perfect reality, down to every last detail.

You'll forget you ever made the deal and everything will feel just as real.

Do you accept the deal or continue living in this reality?

Naw. Too much shit could go wrong.

But in the express case that we are somehow sure that NOTHING will go wrong, why not?

Definitely stay in the real world, for sure. Living in an isolation tank would be a pretty shitty life.

The real world is just a simulation anyway.
How do you know that you didnt already agree to this?
I think I did.

But how do you know that some kind of pan-dimensional beings which you were one of gave you the opportunity to sign up for a simulation of space and time (when you originally existed outside of space and time) but your memory wouldve been wiped beforehand?
It's common theory that our existence is a simulation.

Yo dawg, I heard you like simulations so we put a simulation inside of your simulation so that you can live in a simulated simulation.

That's all. I think people who claim life to be a simulation are more in the position to prove that than people who believe life is real are to prove it's real.

Lol god damn what is it with everyone who takes psychedelics ending up thinking life is fake?

It's just because you've been living the same life for however old you are, nothing about life seems fake, you have human emotions, human actions, you have human limits. I just don't understand how people think this. You can tell a dream is fake once you wake up, so why is there any reason to believe that a life you've been living for years and years seems so fake?

I don't know. I'd rather live a life knowing it's real and dealing with any problems that come my way instead of escaping into a tub to forget about real life issues. Just seems kinda like a pussy thing to do.

if it's a simulation, what's it simulating? how would you know?

maybe dying is ending the game and getting back to real life?

since this life is all anybody knows, the answer is unobtainable

as for Op, there's no way for me to know whether it's legitimate, and not just going to keep me aware of this life trapped in an isolation tank for years so i wouldn't do it.

but hypothetically speaking, where it's a definite in what it does, then yes I'd take it. like a version of the matrix where everything you could ever want to happen, happens:Awemazing:

Because psychedelics can show you a very real world of a different sort.  Just because it doesn't conform with regular "consensus reality" doesn't make it any less tangible.  This reveals the reality that what we experience is in fact a simulation that only points to something "real" outside of our perception.

Well a lot of people have different opinions on psychedelics. So technically I can't argue with yours. To me, psychedelics are nothing more than a drug, that CAN help you come to conclusions about different things that would be harder to obtain sober, but I just don't see them as some magic tool that tells you your whole life is fake.

I feel like if a simulation has the power to give you a perfect life, and life is a simulation, why is it so hard to have a perfect life in the "real world"?

All I'm saying is that subjective experience cannot show us exactly what is actually there, it is only the brain's interpretation.
I won't know if there is a "higher self" until I'm dead.

All I'm saying is I don't know how an isolation tank is really comparable to a life you've lived your whole existence.

If anything is possible in a simulation, apparently, then anything should be possible in the life you live now.

Why is it so hard to have a perfect dream?

IMO the only thing holding us back are ourselves and the things we've bought into about 'reality.'

Life has been very different ever since I've become suspicious of it.

Well I'm kinda drunk but I think I know what you're asking.

And I think that it would be different because you have lived your whole life so far already, and you've had problems to deal with in your life I'm sure, and if you go into a tub knowing your life will be perfect, that already tells the difference between an isolation tank and the real world.

In a simulation anything can happen, but in the real world, things happen beyond your will. If reality were a simulation, so much more would be possible.

But back to what I mentioned earlier, you can think life is a simulation, but you'd have no real reason to validly think that right? What makes you guys think life is a simulation in the first place?

Is it so crazy to think that real life is actually real?

What has become different ever since you started being suspicious of it? I'm just going back to my original point, if life were a simulation..more would be possible.

I'm sure your views on things have changed since then, but not your power to control anything about it.

I don't claim to know anything about reality. It could be a simulation. Impossible to tell as of now.

I don't think it's a simulation though.

But I do think that a dream is equally as real as your waking life

Last night I had a dream I had a gigantic garbage sack of substrate which was growing toons of cyanescens. I was just dragging it around with me trying to find a good place to harvest and dry the mushrooms. I was awoken before my quest could be completed though

Everyone has their own opinion and that's cool. I was just wondering what made people that believe life is a simulation, believe that life is actually a simulation.

Because they're more responsible for giving a reason on why it is than people who believe it's real should tell why it's real.

Reality can go fuck itself.

Right now I've sorted out my life sort of well and I dont compain. I have pretty fucked up personal issues that morph into repressed memories and whatnot but I dont wanna go into that. To put it simply: yes!!

I would totally abort living in reality and donate my mind to a virtual landscape of self-made delusions away from the burden of conscious existence.
