Riding that kind of bike, he probably got killed on an intersection...

I always wanted to stick a golf club between his front wheel spokes as he was riding.

I second this advice. I don't know a ton about bikes, but I like me a hybrid.
I had a Hybrid bike kind of like a mix between a street/road bike and a cruiser meets a mountain bike.
I paid $280 for it brand new, only thing I would have liked better on it was disc brakes..
But that thing was the best bike I ever owned, until someone stole it and sold it for heroin money :bored:
Handles very well and rides super smooth on the streets like a road bike, but rugged enough that it can handle a little bit a trails and off roads. Best of both worlds.

Whatcha know I found a pic of him, nothing super special but it was clean and rode smooth as fuck

Haro makes great bikes, but disc brakes are a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, I don't really get into bike technology.

I live in an area infested with hipsters who think I'm nuts for not riding a fixie.

So, I'm like, whatever.

The Haro I have is the first bike I've had in probably ten years.  I just walked into the local bike shop and asked for something reasonable in price that I wouldn't have to fuck with much.

Just a recommendation.  I don't ride on any hardcore trails, just along the river and lake here and some local bike paths.  That said, I've never run into any problems with the brakes at all.

Ya im not looking to get all foocking crazy either.  Just need a bike that can handle moderate trails and cruise good in the towns.  Thanks again for the pointers errybody.

I dunno about Schwinn, I always thought they were kinda cheap/mass produced, but they have been making bikes for forever so they probably know a thing or two.
But I don't know very much about bikes and only owned a schwinn when I was a kid so I could just be talking out of my ass..

Light and fast on streets, but it can take light trails.

As for the used bike recommendation, I'd steer clear of a bike that is more than a few years old.
Parts break on bikes. You will have to replace them. Be very wary of used bikes IMO.

I'd check out the Forge Sawback 5xx. Entry level hardtail with decent specs for around $400.
You'll have to learn how to work on it yourself or take it in for service though.

If you want to spend a little more at the local bike shop, I can give you more recommendations.

Going over 400$ is kinda pushing it for me.  Thats abouth the most i'd like to pay.  I dont really know the difference between hardtail, dual shock, and all the other jargon that comes with biking.  I obviously need to do more research. Thanks alot for the suggestions.

Yeah... Keep in mind that this is a brand new bike. And pretty much as cheap as it gets for a mountain bike. (Like one you can really take down a mountain.)

Steer clear of full suspension (i.e. dual shock).
They have an additional shock in the back.
Makes your butt comfy while going down hills.
Only problem is that you can't put a decent one together for under 1.5k or so.
Any full suspension that costs less skimped somewhere.

Look for a nice 2 or 3-year old hybrid bike from a big name manufacturer: Trek, Specialized, Giant, Gary Fisher, GT, Scott, Marin, Felt...

He said he wants it for local light trails.

He doesn't need a bike you can take down a mountain.

You can buy a perfectly serviceable brand-new mountain bike for 400 dollars.

Again, I paid less than that my for my brand-new Haro a few years ago.  I ride it almost every day and have never had any problems with it whatsoever.

It was just my recommendation. I'd get a mountain bike that I can also take on streets. But because of his price range, I recommended a hybrid.

You'd be hard pressed to buy a GOOD perfectly serviceable brand-new mountain bike for 400 dollars BTW. But that's a separate discussion.

Yeah, I completely disagree.

While it's easily possible to spend thousands of dollars on a mountain bike, in doing so you are just getting all kinds of bells, whistles, and high-performance components the average person is never going to use or need.

Get a Trek. They are made by the honest hard working hand. They are pretty inexpensive, and you can cruise the road, or hit the softer trails.

There is a Trek I want right now at my local bike shop for only 250.00 dollars, and it's pretty dope. 700c tires ftw.

sounds reasonable.  Is it a hybrid?  What does 700c mean in terms of tires?

Take a company like Trek for instance.

If you want a good, entry-level mountain bike from them, you're looking at the Trek 4300 Disc.
Last year's model is $450. This year's is $550.

And usually they have to cheap out somewhere to make it into that price range.
Derailleurs, brakes, fork... these are the places they'll cheap out.
Meaning if you really want to get into mountain biking, you're already gonna be thinking about swapping stuff out.

Yes its a hybrid. And the 700c tires are a lot thinner than mtn bike tires. So you go faster, easier

Bikes come in sizes.

The important measurement is inseam. From the floor up between your legs to your taint (you can put a book against the bone to draw a straight line).
