Brand new first time grow.... Question about temp to keep jars.
    #14309698 - 04/17/11 11:31 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I have constructed an incubator and I have been reading through threads only to find everyone range goes from anywhere from 70 degrees to 86.

I have mine set at around 80 no more than 85 is this to high or just right?  They were not in a incubator before hand and it was kinda cold where im at and only one took off VERY slowly but it is almost fully colonized the others are struggling to say the least.

I think they will come out to play in the incubator but I don't want to kill them can someone answer this for me.  They are golden teachers from THE

so 78 would be more ideal?  Is it okay if I have left them in the 80-85 for a day or so

85 is way too high. Take them out of your incubator. You want them to be at the ambient temperature in your house.

I killed my spores on my first attempt with BRF because I used an incubator like you.

I have read posts of others, who were keeping their colonizing jars in an incubator, which was set at 86 degrees, according to the post~so in regards of you "killing" them by too high of a temperature, I think you should probably be fine with the temperature your at. Anywhere in the 70-86 range will do, most likely. Good Luck

just to be safe I dropped it down to 78.  I think I might have mucked these jars up because they are also 1pint.

But I am determined and have ordered some amazonian, more GT's, and Bplus along with 1/2 pint jars that are all ready to be inoculated since the spores got here fast as hell from THE.  So im going to see how these old jars do and if they dont show any improvement I might toss em and just try it fresh at 78 degrees in an incubator with the 1/2 pints.  I will keep everyone posted I hope everything goes well.

Fyi I did a brown rice (ground)/verm mix on the pints, and on all the half pints I switched to verm/ brown flour

You shouldn't use an incubator. Leave your jars at room temperature.

I thought it sped up the incubation process and was relatively safe to do so?

the 1/2 pints haven't been inoculated yet but they can be at anytime so I can decide to leave them out of the incubator if that is the most effective way.  Or maybe I can do a 50/50 experiment and see how it goes.

the only problem with my room temp is that it can change drastically sometimes and I have heard they can go into shock and it may stunt their growth which is what I think happened to them this time around which is why I wanted to give them a controlled environment

No. You probably killed your spores by overheating them. Do a fucking search already. Stop guessing and start learning.

No need to be rude there are obviously many varying opinions on "optimal" conditions.  I feel what I am currently doing is not out of the norm by any means.  Yes I am a noobie and still learning but I don't appreciate the hate.  I will definitely take your advice and this next time around keep them out of the incubator.  I appreciate your advice and I apologize for upsetting you.  I will let you know how it goes.

I also made an incubator based on this guide http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek so it is obviously not out of the ordinary to incubate your jars.  Again I appreciate what you have to say but don't make me feel like a complete douche when this is obviously a common method.

I only use an incubator in cold seasons. Other wise its point less . At night its really cold an slows down growth. But even in an incubator I only go as high as 75. Anything higher leads to higher contam rates . And once contaminates  show up , its all bad.
