Cleaning to reduce contams?
    #14309120 - 04/17/11 09:34 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

My apartment is 1100 square feet. About half of that is my living room, kitchen, dining room combo. How do I clean this area effectively to reduce contams prior to starting my project?

Do I need to dust, wash walls, vacuum, wipe down cabinets and tables with alcohol? This is a big room. Also I have a pressure cooker and bought a clear container to make a glove box. So is it okay to just vacuum, dust and then spray with lysol stuff and then make my jars and PC them and then do the rest in the glove box? And is it safe to sterilize the syringe in flame outside the box? It seems like more contams could get on it by removing it from the box.

They sell air filters for apartments to put on your vents, because the ac units they use are dick filthy. Other than that I'd say go all out with wiping all the walls, bug bombing, cleaning drawers and cabinets, shampoo your carpets and bed, get crazy on the bathroom, and anything else you can think about lol

where exactly are you innoculating?  i wouldn't inoculate in a "big room".

also, the key here is to be sterile.  cleaning =/= sterilization.  this is not to say you shouldn't clean your area however.  although cleaning helps, there's always a chance of contamination.

i always did my work in a closet.  spray down a closet, wait ten to fifteen minutes for it to settle, and go at it.

inside or outside, it's fine to flame sterilize.  if you're using an alcohol lamp it's wise to keep it running outside your glovebox... for good reasons :crazy2:

Its easier to clean the bathroom. Its a lot smaller, and usually more hard surfaces. If you have a shower with sliding doors, it could damn near be a clean room.

Most of this is unnecessary.  as Kuuyku stated, make sure your immediate surroundings, your tools and you (including clothing, hair, and under nails) are clean.

Use a glovebox.  Clean it out with soap and water before use.

Use gloves

Sanitize gloves and tools with alcohol before use.  The only exception is your needle which should be flame sterilized and then after a second or two of cooling be used to inoculate.

Make sure you're using good procedure and technique while inoculating, seal all jars tight and make sure you've provided for GE.

This should suffice.

You should use a glovebox but keeping your house clean and organized is a good habit to have.

Now can I use the Glovebox like RR showed in the video? He didn't have the gloves attached to the box. He had gloves on and something up his arms. I don't have anything for the arms yet.

Should I just do basic cleaning and spraying in the kitchen/living combo and then make up my jars and PC, wait 'til it cools, like the next day and then take the PC into the bathroom that will be sterilized and then open and transfer the contents to the glovebox and inoculate in the glovebox in the bathroom? Or would it be okay to transfer to the glovebox in the kitchen?

I'm only asking because I'm 3 weeks in to my first batch and I have nothing. I have 2 jars that may be contaminated, but the rest show nothing. Absolutely nothing.

I'm hoping that things will go better if I take better precautions cleaning. The first time I wiped down the whole kitchen area, but didn't have any lysol type air spray. Also I got my syringes from microsporetech. That was before I found this site. I have one more syringe from them.

I know a lot people say to give it time, but after 3 weeks it seems like something should have grown, even contams. I'm pretty sure the jars were sterilized. Though my apt. is pretty cool since I keep the temp between 60-65 because it's cheaper. I have a seedling heat mat, but I heard that things like that can cause condensation in the jars which is a bad thing. I don't know why, but I'm assuming it's because of contams.

you don't need to spray the kitchen before PC'ing.

any germs and spores that may have landed in your BRF will be eliminated when you PC.

also it's possible your syringes might be bunk.  it happens, my very first syringe i got (KSSS to be specific) never fired.

you should order from one of the sponsors on this site.  I can vouch for sporeworks

I've thought of that and if my 2nd syringe doesn't do anything either I will definitely be using sponsors afterwards.

When I searched the forum for why people didn't like the vendor I got my syringe from I couldn't find out why because any thread gets shut down so I have no idea why people don't like that one.

Spores101 are dirty thieves, that's all I know.

Good luck sister. My friend is kind of in the same boat. I can vouch for sporeworks as well. My friend saw mycelium growth in three days with the Malabar strain. Highly recommended! The spores in that syringe, according to my friend, were just beautiful...and bulky. That was a free syringe too.

I'm going to try making another batch this weekend and if that's a bunk i'll try one of the sponsors. It's just the waiting that's killing me. I thought waiting a week was hard. I'm at 3 weeks now and thinking of a new batch. I just want to watch things grow. That's the fun part. I like growing things like the tomato plant that's been growing since January. I can't wait until it gets warm and I can finally put it outside with all my other new seedlings.

Don't bother waiting, you'll have to wait for a new set of syringes to ship from a sponsor anyway. Go ahead and order some now. I'll bet a car wash token that your other syringe is equally bunk.
