Permaculture career?
    #14306359 - 04/17/11 01:21 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Is anyone familiar with permaculture? I've become fascinated by the idea and would love to be able to have a career based upon or around it.
Does anyone here have any experience with this? are there any viable career choices that have to do with permaculture? If so what are my options and how do you go about achieving them?
I'm not really sure of the best way to approach it, should I go from a design standpoint and take landscape or architectural design courses? or should I go from a more hands on approach and take courses that have to do more with botany and gardening and actually building rather than designing?

Fully sustainable and independent living is a dream of mine and I would love to have a career based upon that, I just don't know where to start.

You can be an independent contractor. Once you get it down and have your own set up you can help other to do the same. That and grain companies are always always looking for permaculture experts

So I could start off as a landscape contractor and take courses to eventually specialize in permaculture type or sustainable landscaping?

Hi,

I'm relatively new to Permaculture, but I have taken the PDC.  The design techniques and ethic could be applied to many career choices, only limited by your imagination.  Also, keep in mind that being partially self-sufficient and consuming fewer resources will allow you to be comfortable while earning less money.

Some broad examples:
Ecological Design Consultant
Farmer
Plant Nursery
Educator
Forester
Eco-tourism/retreats
Herbalist
Green Builder

I like what you have mentioned for courses.  Environmental and geology classes could also be useful.  Hands on could also include working on a farm or ecovillage to learn species.  Check out Cosmic Bob's Plan for Your LIfe The Bullocks are great examples of all of the above careers.

hmm, thanks for the helpful advice and link. doing the PDC is the first thing on my list, I just got to find a job that will relate to and eventually branch into permaculture/sustainable living and hopefully make enough money off of it to buy my own land and live sustainably myself one day. I think I'll look into landscaping/landscape design and definitely do allot of research on plants and sustainable farming n such in my free time.
