Interesting. You "pasteurize in place"?

duct tape all the holes add all ingredients to the tub and bring water to a boil for ~5min (its a little less than 1.25gal for this mix ratio)
dump in somewhat slowly and put lid on then kind of slosh it around till you cant feel the water moving back and forth.
let sit for like 15 min then open and mix ingredients with a spoon really well (coir should have expanded by then)
if there are still some 'dry' pieces of coir ill let sit for around another 10 and repeat.
finally once it has a good consistency ill pack it down with the spoon tightly to let it 'cook' itself for at least 45 but longer doesnt seem to hurt
ill then fluff and let cool to room temp
to spawn i break up jars with a roll of duct tape then take like 3 big scoops of spawn out and put in a separate bowl. add spawn and mix well then cover with the spawn i set aside.
all this is usually done while sitting on a carpeted floor
i polyfil 1 bottom hole for colonization

*edit* also this is a 10gal tub with ~4"sub depth

Very cool, I will be following damion's tek also and I was wondering about the effects of using a smaller tub. Why did you decide to polyfill one hole? They're normally all taped, right?

they say some GE is good during colonization so i figured the lighter stuff would come in through the lid and eventually some of the heavier stuff (CO2) would be pushed out through the hole. dunno if it makes any difference but i've always done it and have never had premi pinning due to it (when i was a newb i'de open it a lot and that caused some early pinning)
just a quick update -- just got done picking them. i know they are probably a little over matured but i had class until 7:30 tonight. 8 1/2 trays in the dehydrator -- never had that many (usually around 3-4 tray) but have normally done 3 jars of spawn. assuming i get ~.75oz dry per tray thats a little less than 6.5 dry first flush.
i'll update in the AM with an accurate dry weight though

4.2oz dry 1st flush -- not the 6.5 i was roughly estimating but they shrank a lot more than i expected, but 4.2oz more than i had 2 days ago!
gonna let it sit for like ~5 days then dunk and fruit for round 2
