Laminar Flow Hood Build 36X24 (pics)

I really lucked out because my buddy has access to a workshop which made this project much easier. I used this diagram for the cuts but modified the measurements to accommodate a 36X24.

The challenging component on this flow hood was the blower. After some research I found that the blowers required for 24X12 flow hoods and smaller come with flanges on the outlet which makes mounting them very easy. Once you go bigger than 24X12 the flanges disappear from the blowers:

After all the cuts were made we traced the blower outlet:

Then cut out the blower hole with a jig saw:

Using wood glue, a nail gun, and silicone we constructed the box and sealed all gaps.

Next, we inserted the blower outlet as far down as it would go and mounted the brackets, one on each side:

We used metal-to-metal screws to mount the brackets to the blower. Wood screws were used on the bottom half of the brackets:

After mounting the blower we flipped the flow hood upside down and filled the gaps with silicone:

On the blower there is a data plate that tells you how to connect your power cord (sold seperately). I followed the 115V guide on the left, which is your standard 3 prong plug:

- The power cord has three wires: white, black and green.
- White from the blower goes to white from the power cord.
- Orange and red from the blower go together.
- Blue and black from the blower goes to black from the power cord (twist all three together).
- Grey and brown from the blower should already be attached to the capacitor of the blower.
- Green from the power cord gets screwed down on the blower. It's the ground cable. The
screw is designated and labeled on the blower.
The HEPA filter came with a gasket around the perimeter of one side:

When we attached the 1"x1" furring strips, we measured it so that the filter would stick up just a hair above the sides of the box. Then we...
- Lowered the filter into the box.
- Cut our trim pieces.
- Applied wood glue to the trim and put the trim in place.
- Used clamps to force the filter down, which smashed the filter gasket against the 1"x1" furring strips, creating a seal.
- Nailed the trim down.
- Removed clamps and placed flow hood face down on flat surface to dry for 48 hrs.

I can't decide whether to mount the filter inside against the blower intake, or just mount it on the outside? Either way I will have to cut a hole right where the filter is below:

Dear Glove Box,

We had a good run didn't we? We experienced many emotions together over the course of our relationship. We had our ups and downs. Remember the time with the agar and bloody mary mix bottle? Boy that was interesting. Well, I guess this is it. I just want you to know how grateful I am for letting me enter you all those times without complaining. Let's keep in touch -RiverFish

Very nice. I'd mount the prefilter on the side of the box if you have the option. It will have a larger surface area to catch dust.
How do you lift the dust cover past the fish? Nice touch by the way but make sure it stays clean or it will harbor dust that can drop down during work. RR

As of right now the fish is just mounted with a piece of thick double-sided tape. The cover actually grazes the fish when you slide it off. Once I glue it on permanently it should be fine. I did not think about the fish harboring dust, thanks for the tip.
Looks like the prefilter will go on the side of the box then. It will be easier to replace it that way also.
Thanks for the cool comments everyone!

It is a monster...my wife said "oh is that where you grow your mushrooms?". Everyone thinks the mushrooms grow inside the hood.
Perhaps it is a bit too big. 24X24 would be nice also.

You did it great. Can you specify witch type of filter and fan did you use?

I realize the op is probably not going to answer this, but for the rest of you all. what are the benefits of having the blower offset like this instead of directly over center?

I dont think it matters much: laminar flow from the filter is generated by the pressure build-up in the plenum and should be fairly uniform regardless of the positioning of the blower... I plan on doing a rather deep plenum with the blower back center... simply for aesthetics ... mine won't be quite as big:

But I'm thinking it'll be sufficient! EXCITED, just arrived today
