Roaster vs Pressure Cooker
    #14306533 - 04/17/11 01:52 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello All,

I'm looking to start up my old hobby again but in a bigger and better way and had a question or two. I no longer have a pressure cooker, so I was wondering if a roaster (sort of like a slow cooker) would suffice as a way to sterilize my jars? I know I've read some stuff about how it probably wouldn't work, but that was with crock pots and this roaster goes up to 450 degrees... Also, I will be using a bulk substrate of poo/straw, and was going to use the pillowcase method to pasteurize that in the roaster as well. Anyone have good luck with this?

It'll work but the main drawback is your sub will almost always moisturize the dry verm layer if you have one

If he is using a poo/straw bulk substrate, chances are he isn't doing cakes. I have a roaster that I bought for cultivation, and the only thing I've found a use for it for, is pasteurizing straw and boiling a lot of water to prep my coir with.

I'll prolly give WBS a try this time.. try an find a used PC somewheres since it's obviously gonna be my best bet ...

Another question: what are people's preferred method for spawning bulk substrates? I've got a general method I'll prolly use but if anyone has any helpful ideas i'm open to suggestions
