I got excited for a few minutes, until I found out that it was going to be a First-Person shooter?!?!!

I feel exactly the same. I downloaded and played enemy unknown a few months ago using dosbox and it was so much fun still to this day. Such deep strategy involved and the combination of the overworld planet view/base-building/interceptor dogfighting/turned-based ground missions was amazing and gave almost infinite replay value.
As for the FPS reboot ...it really makes me sad. I have no idea why they aren't trying to improve upon the original with updated graphics, deeper gameplay, etc.
Have you tried the other "UFO" games like afterlife/aftermath? They aren't too bad if you just want some turn-based strategy and light base-building back in your life. They also made a nearly 1:1 copy of enemy unknown with updated graphics with a few minor changes.
I have tried the Rebelstar Tactical Command game for the Game Boy Advanced that came out a number of years ago. It is a lot like the combat portion of X-Com, but that is about it. I have also tried UFO2000, but it too is only the combat portion of the game -however it is fun being able to play against other human players.
I haven't tried the UFO Afterlight or Aftermath yet.

http://pc.ign.com/objects/014/014775.html - has a link to the demo too if you want to try it out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO:_Extraterrestrials - this is their updated version of ufo enemy unknown. Small changes but very close to the original with some improvements and some things changed for the worse.

I was going to completely forget about it when I made a post, but yes, I can safely say Ultima Online is my favorite game of all time. I played that game for years and have so many good/bad memories of playing 24/7 with my friends. Too bad EA had to buy it out and ruin it

Hands down. Not even a contest if you were a part of that game in the earlier years (maybe years 1-3) you were part of something special. Would give anything to go back to that game and that time.

Yea, I try to explain this to people in my WoW guild and they're just like...huh? They want to know how it was better when it didn't have instancing and the combat wasn't as advanced. I try to explain it but it was just something about that game that felt like I had become my character and I was living in a new world. WoW and no other mmo ever did that to me. Just things like not having little "!" above quest givers and having to go out and find the quest giver and saying the right phrases in sequence/etc. Or how the players set up trading outposts in the ec tunnels. Plus it was hard to get across the world and if you died it really meant something and was hard to recover from.

ffffuuuuucccckkkkk.... thats a really hard question.... can i do categories?? ok im going to anyway...
Story: Final Fantasy 7
Technology(engine): Half-Life 2(source engine)
Gameplay: World of Warcraft... I know people are going to hate on this, but the fact is, this game is an amazing feat of the minds of thousands of people... it is the most balanced MMORPG of its style, with a great team working behind it, and i have never gotten bored of it in the end...
Graphics: Fallout 3... Not for micro quality, but for its macro quality... bleak, but amazingly envisioned environments with great rendering...
EDIT: If Guild Wars 2 looks as good as it has up to this point in videos and whatnot, then the Graphics section will be changing...

Quake 1 multiplayer. Clan deathmatches in the early days were hella fun.
Other than that, Dark Age of Camelot. Leveling up was no different then other MMORPGs, but the 3 way realm wars once you were max level were the shit.

i wanted to add counter-strike (ive been playing since the very beginning of 1.5 and i still find it crazy fun and addicting)
and also Half-Life. such an epic single player game. (still havnt played through half-life 2 yet, but im sure ill love it just as much if not more once i get around to playing it)
oh and 4player matches on Goldeneye for n64 was so much fun in its time.
my most hours of gameplay overall though have probably went into original Everquest and Counter-strike.

Good shout here. Sooo many days wasted, but tons of fun. Still a bit addicted to Civ 4.

Old games are cool and all but... Crysis 2 (pc of course, fool) is living up to my expectations pretty well.
Old stuff... any Neverwinter Nights vets out there? That game gave me thousands of hours of fun. Red Dragon Disciple/ Weapon master: Double Axe. Massive ass kicking. Although I gotta say the game was cool because you could specialize so much. Once I made a druid that specialized in killing people by inflicting a type of super buffed disease. Cast, turn into animal and run... watch them wither and die because noobs don't put points into constitution. I did a similar thing with a Wizard. Flesh to Stone is an awesome spell. I absolutely loved being able to turn other players into statues of themselves as they were when they got hit.

My all-time favorite game would probably have to be D20 Modern. Followed by Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Guilds Wars, too. And all the Call of Duties. And somewhere on that list, RISK.
