What nasties have I got growing in this plate?

My plate work has been going well, with very little contamination. But I don't know what is going on here.

What is growing around the periphery, and is it interacting with the mycelium in the center? And even though the central mycelium looks good from the top, what is making it so dark when viewed from the bottom?

possibly a bacteria contam. IMO what scares me the most is that muddy thing coming out on right of mycelium.

Of course, I'm gonna toss this plate. But I'd really like to understand this plate's contamination for my own knowledge. I'd like to know why the underside of the mycelium is dark. I've seen this in another plate or two. Could I take an agar sample of the center mycelium and xfer to another agar uncontaminated? Just the top of the mycelium, or is it all contaminated?

you'd take a tiny bit of mycelium which doesn't look contaminated. that's the purpose of agar, a limited 2-dimensional space for visual inspection.
be aware though that there may be single cells or other microscopic structures not visible to the naked eye posing a risk of being transferred along with your sample.
I'd say have a try though

So what IS that brown stuff that likes to grow on the underside of agar plate mycelium? And is that ring going to the edge of the dish bacterial or fungal? And I'm wondering if it starting growing from the edges uniformly. Had contamination spots on the edges, but nothing as regular as this.

If you're that interested, just go on Freecycle and ask for a microscope That's how I got my $1000 dollar scope, though the fine focus pin came out and I'm still waiting on it being repaired. To me there is nothing more fun than looking through a microscope discovering stuff

I'd love to have a good microscope! Don't know if I'll be as lucky as you on Freecycle. And can't afford to buy one, as I'm paying off my extravagant flow hood.
Just though somebody would have come across something like this before.
