water testing

i'd figure this would be the place to ask. is it someting i can buy? is this expensive? how do i go about getting my water tested? we dont drink it anyway, and we filter water, but im just curious. what prompted me to do this is, i just came from my parents house, out in the sticks. their water is DISGUSTING! its some kind of toxic well water..!
you turn on their faucet and a smell comes out and the water is even tinted yellow. they dont seem at all concerned about drinking from unsafe, untested weird wells. i even tried to scare them with that video on youtube where the guy lights a lighter and blows his water up. and they still seem un-bothered, un-concerned about their water source. if you take a shower, it drains weird and leaves some kind of residue that is, not your average mineral.
i live in the city, so i have "city-water" whatever that is. but its gross, "hard" water, and sometimes smells funny so we avoid it. i know many people that drink it some who say its could and i just stare at them bugg-eyed. my dogs drink it on occasion, if anything we should test it for them..

Water testing is not something you can do yourself. You have to send a sample to a lab. Testing for bacteria is pretty simple and inexpensive. Testing for other contaminants will be more costly.
It's possible that the problem is in the well system and not the water that's bad. The well could be dirty and need cleaning or the filters might need to be changed, for example. A rotten egg smell can come from harmless bacterial that feed on iron and this can be fixed with a bleach flush of the well.
Don't rush into anything, though. Start searching and reading and learning just like if you were getting ready to your first grow. There's lots of information online.
As for your city water, they are required to test their water and give you a copy of the results. All you have to do is ask.

often times well water that smells funny is because it's passed through sulfur or other stinky elements

Depending on where you live you can go to you local dept of ag or epa office and I believe that they will give water tests for you. Many scientific sites will sell a water test kit that is for students or curious individuals (yourself).
You can do a few things yourself. If the substance has a yellowish tint to it and doesnt immediately fall out of solution, could be very hard water. Is there any farms close by? Where does its water run off to? If it has a more reddish brown look and pieces fall out of solution quickly or easily, most likely rust and due to old ass pipes. What is the age of the house? Old farm house? I believe older pipes were made of iron instead of copper. Put a magnet in the water for a while and you should see pieces begin to adhere to it if it is iron. You can buy lead test kits in almost every state in a stores paint department to check for that. Though it doesnt seem to be what you want to do, taste it! Does it taste metallic? Probablyis.

hey thanx for the input wouldnt that be scary if u put a magnet to your water and it attracted particles? i dont kno what it is but i am just really creeped out by dirty or lets just say "questionable" water..
they live out in the boondoxx. it is total farm country although nobody is immediately close by their house. they live in a big old farm style house now out in the country 2 hours and some from the city. where i am. when i was little, we grew up in low income apartment complexes

My gma and gpa's house was on a well. They lived in the bottom off the mississippi. It makes the best sun tea ever, but gives you the shits for the first week til your body gets used to it . My childhood memories. I will never forget the taste of well water tea. Reminds me of looking to snakes up the hill and playing in the creek.
