[CAN] Rare mushroom infestation destroys home (7 feet tall?!)
    #14297870 - 04/15/11 08:40 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

This cant be right...?!

Rare mushroom infestation destroys home - Toronto Sun Apr 15 2011

MONTREAL - A rare, highly toxic mushroom has invaded a Quebec couple's home, forcing them to leave and abandon all their belongings.

Claude Vadeboncoeur and his partner Jessy Paille have been out of a home for 10 months and have yet to receive compensation from the companies their lawyer claims are responsible for the infestation.

The problems started in February 2009 when the couple's insurance company hired two construction firms to fix a leaking roof and water-damaged walls in their house in Maskinonge, about 100 km north of Montreal.

The couple alleges that the repair work wasn't done properly, which allowed the dry-rot fungus called Serpula lacrymans to overtake their home.

A year passed between the construction work and the discovery of the mushroom. During that time, Paille's health degraded and she said she had to be brought to the hospital by ambulance several times.

"We were told to leave our house and we couldn't go back," said Vadeboncoeur.

Paille said even the clothes they were wearing when they left their house had to be destroyed.

The mushroom measured more than seven feet by the fall of 2010.

The couple are taking their case to court in the spring of 2012.

I don't see why it couldn't be seven feet tall. If the fungal infestation had climbed its way up the house then in effect it would become seven feet tall and possibly even taller if left to consume the wood.

I was just having a hard time picturing a 7ft tall fruiting body, since they said 7 foot "mushroom".  But I did a quick google search and now understand what they mean:

Disgusting!

I don't know if I would consume a magic dry-rot fungus.  Just seems like one of nature's dirty workers.

You are confusing the mushroom fruit body with the fungal organism as a whole.
