A lot of those subs guys have brown stalks and stuff and there are a lot that look like those near mine. How do you tell those apart from the other brown ones that look very similiar and aren't psych?

If they bruise blue and have purple brown spores there good to go.
But if they have rusty colored spores, bin them.... Always check
Make a IDentifacation request in the right thread and the trusted identifiers will tell you if they are subs or not...
But remember they will allways bruise BLUE! Never yellow, ever.. Make sure they are growing in wood, bark or leaves,

ON the trail though how do you check because there are a lot of the brown ones with brown stalks that don't bruise within a few minutes if squeezed.

Urhhh umm
Your best chance is to bruise. But that takes time. Maybe you can just take them all home and sort it out from there Sorry I can't help.... Once you have found alot and your more experienced you will know the good from the bad

They don't always bruise that quick, but I find that 90% of subs I come across already have bruises on them.
Edithpiaf the best thing to do would be to take photos of them and post them here. We will tell you if they are subs or not.

I learnt to ID Subaeruginosa by getting my first finds identified here on the shroomery, reading as much as possible about them and staring at as many pictures as I could find. You will gain confidence ID'ing them after your first couple of seasons picking them, and learning the differences between them and other species that you find. Nowadays I can tell if they are subs pretty much straight away after hunting them for six seasons.
If the stem has gone brown due to dirt etc, the cap and gill colour should be your next indicator to look at - quite often the cap edge shows bluing, gill colour should be a creamy brown, cap colour can vary from an almost white to gold to dark caramel depending on if they are wet or dry.
As Ouijah said, post your pics and we'll ID them for you

Stopped off for a quick look yesterday in the rain - nothing happening in the patches from last year.
There was not even much sign of in actives that tend to grow in the same area.
Unfortunately it is still a bit early in the season for me...

Haha! Normally I wouldn't mind if I found one under a drying mushroom but these had like 5 in each... They turned the caps black where they had eaten and the mushrooms started to smell like off cheese.
