Hell yeah, that was the only benefit to growing up in a Jewish household

I grew up in a pentecostal christian household so we basically ate dirt.
And arsenic.
And rattlesnakes.
I liked paste a lot though.
I ate a leather belt a lot too though so I guess it all evened out.

I liked to really change things up and speak in tongues in sign language.

Speaking in tongues, in the modern sense is bullshit. A careful examination of the book of acts reveals that when speaking in tongues occured, it was a real human language that was known to someone else in the group who could translate for every one else. Nowadays people get up and do stupid shit like "BABABAH GIRGAGIRGA POOPIE!" Totally differnet phenomina.

Under current law, wouldn't you be arrested if you were heard saying that phrase after stepping off a train in Berlin?

I personally think their laws forbidding the swastika, for example, which is a very ancient symbol that was rebranded and usurped by the Nazis, are the legacy of rather myopic and panicked German politicians following WWII.  I'm not saying they were or were not necessarily the right thing for Germany at one time - und Ich bin kein Deutsch; Ich weiss nichts - but it surprises me, as an American, that they remain on the books to this day.

this is kinda random but i feel like sharing this story, since the topic is somewhat related to religion.

one time when i was like 12, my friend and i got super drunk for some reason and then went to church. his older brother was SUPER christian and was like a youth leader in the church or something, and he knew i was (i still am) athiest.

anyway, my friend and i wanted to go back home and get more drunk, so i pretended to be sick and we had my friends older brother drive us back to the house.

i got sooooooooo trashed that day when we got back. and ended up passing out on my friends bed throwing up everywhere. i mean EVERYWHERE. straight up exorcist style projectile vomiting.

his older brother then got back from church at some point and saw what was going on, and in my drunken stupor i managed to spit out that i had seen god.  (:lmafo:)

he thought that god possessed me during the sermon, which made the demons in me angry and got me sick, then i had a religious revelation or something upon returning home. nobody ever found out we had been drinking. his entire family was fucking amazed and thought i had been touched by god.

i think it was a pro as hell way to get out of that mess.

I got caught cheating on a test by a nun once, and lied about knowing in my heart that god thought it was wrong, and that I was glad I got caught.

She ended up not only forgiving me, but talking shit about the godlessness of other students to me the rest of the year

Fanatical religion is a pretty weird thing to me.
I can understand the need to know a higher being and all but once it starts getting self serving and strange, it sort of looses me.
I grew up under a pentecostal preacher father and I have to say that it seems to have had more of a negative impact on my belief system than he would have liked.
Talk about confused as a kid. Jeesh!
I'm in my 40's now and I'm just coming to a place where I realize that I don't really understand shit about it nor do I know what to believe.
I guess that if I had to take one thing from it all, that would be the idea of love.
I think that if we genuinely have love in our hearts for ourselves and our fellow man that there is something, somewhere that will acknowledge it and whatever else happens; it will be ok.

plus, Greenvalley, I imagine most folks posting on the shroomery are acutely aware of just how subjective "reality" is!  Ask Rick Strassman and he'll tell you that alien abductions, night terrors, and near-death-experiences are all due to excessive endogenous DMT production; I can't say I don't find that hypothesis at least somewhat compelling (despite some of the other things he says).

Anyone who ever played "telephone" in grade school knows how garbled/mutated a message becomes when passed from one person to another to another ad nauseum, so it wouldn't surprise me if the origin of many miracle stories is indeed rooted in stories such as S.L.J's.

Edit: By the way, "Beliefs are dangerous, beliefs allow the mind to stop functioning. A non-functioning mind is clinically dead. Believe in nothing." - Whoever wrote the AEnima liner notes.  I choose to think.  I've found that thinking allows me much more flexibility in my philosophy/view of the world/etc. than believing, by definition, ever could - and I appreciate said flexibility a great deal.

Yes it does.  However, it does not mean that you cannot think some things are more likely to be true than others.

I can't even say I believe that I exist; I sense what I sense, and all I truly know is that my experiences are real to me.  Whether my experiences and senses accurately represent external reality, or even postulate the existence of an external reality, is an open question.  Thanks to the fact that science relies on hypotheses and theories, never beliefs, and attaching probability and "weight" to certain ideas over others, I've found the absence of belief to be a quite comfortable state - one I freely admit is not right for everyone.  That said, it works for me.  I like being proven wrong - it means I've learned something.  I like being forced to change my mind or my opinions - it means I've grown.  These things can happen frequently among those things that one "thinks"; when "belief" enters the conversation, however, good luck!

yes if you dont give anything that comes up in your field of awareness any projected value everything seems to become more real. being proved wrong is a good thing to me, I would hate to know everything because then what would I think about? Philosophy=love+wisdome
