Ok, so i've been gone for a little while, and I remember back when I used to read up on things more often, things and techniques were changing constantly, one of my favorite parts of this crowd actually.
I've done a few successful pf grows in the past but I wanna move on up in life, I remember about 6-8 months ago I bought the supplies to start a bulk grow, heres what I've got:
Spores several bags of wbs several quart jars a shotgun fc and extremely little cash
I was wondering what the best tek would be? Like i said i'm strapped for cash at the moment, and unemployed, so i've been having a lot of free time around the house, and miss having a cultivation happening, tending to things etc. I'd love your guys' opinon on what the best tek would be, like I said, people are always innovating here!

I am chaos. I am the substance from which your artists and scientists build rhythms. I am the spirit with which your children and clowns laugh in happy anarchy. I am chaos. I am alive, and I tell you that you are free." HAIL ERIS! ALL HAIL DISCORDIA!

As stated above , the one thing you're going to need is a bulk substrate . Since cash is a problem , I'd recommend finding some H/POO , as it's free.

not many people want to go pick horse shit off the ground at some rednecks house.
a mix of coir and vermiculite is a good enough substrate to work with, its cheap and its easy to find.

Why not do cased grains? Good performance, with nothing to buy if you have some potting soil on hand. Rye is better than wbs for that, but the wbs will work.

Firstly, I hope you have a PC. And here's a shopping list...
- horse poo = awesome and free for anyone who isn't deep in a city. - coir is ~10-15$ for a 5kg block = 7-8 bricks. - I paid 20$ for 3 cu. ft. of verm, which is a lot if you are only doing one tub. - 64qt tub for 8$ - 25# bag of gypsum for 5$ at a farm/garden supply warehouse - spent coffee grounds = free from most any coffee shop. Starbuck's usually has a designated bin in their stores with extra grounds in 5# espresso bags. If you don't see the bin, ask.
If you can't buy anything else as of now, case your grain like Doc recommended.
check my signature link for some more useful info on bulk, FC's, and some other fun stuff.
hope this helps

Yes, coir/verm is cheap and works, but horsepoo is superior IMO.
And please don't be so naive. Not everyone who has horses is a redneck. Actually, they are often very loving and kind people (and wealthy) who are glad to help a community member with their gardening projects.
The last batch I picked up, I used my bare hands to get a good feel of its moisture and smell. It was a little moist and still kinda stinky, but it still worked great! You don't, however, want it smelling like it just came out the horses ass and then got pissed on. Afterward, I used the shovel, and before I left they offered me some iodine and a clean towel to wash my hands. Hardly the behavior of rednecks IMO.

ive got some friends with horses. and plenty of horse shit. whats the best way to get this stuff and travel with it? its a few states away and im going to be up there anyway. might as well pick some up while im there.
should i have them dry it out in the sun first? then i could break it all up and put it in tubs. hopefully at that point it wont smell like straight up horse shit...
(sorry if my redneck comment came off harsh)

call your friends rednecks and see how they react no worries man.
last time I went I brought a 60qt tub and they kinda laughed at me. I guess the norm is to bring your truck, which counts me out, so that you can take a shitload of it. (pun intended?) Being that they are your friends, I doubt they will care how much you take or how. Just bring thick trash bags, or a bin with a lid, or your truck.
On drying, it's hopefully been in the sun long enough already. Even if it's a little stinky/wet, as mentioned above, it will still be fine. Below is the post that convinced me of this, and I have since used almost all the that I was worried about. Oh, and mine was definitely more fresh-looking than what Facey pictured.
enjoy your shit!

Ryath said: so I picked up about 50+qts of hpoo. I'm a bit concerned about it though. it still smells faintly of poo-like things, has flies and maggots (and probably all sorts of other critters) in it, and recently got rained on. I'm not positive it was completely leeched...

The actually does not need to be leeched to the point of not smelling like manure to be used. If it's overpowering - like sticking your nose down 6-8" from the floor of a horse stable - then it's definitely not leeched enough.
In fact, the manure-based bin I made up a couple weeks ago was pretty stinky. The manure was light in color, and nearly all the nuggets were covered in firefang (...a white dusting of powdery fungus - VERY good feature for you plan on using for mushrooms.) so I used it, and the bin colonized in a week, and after 4 days it was more densely colonized than coir ever gets for me:
Here's what the manure looked like:

Note that there are a couple nuggets that are still dark in color, but most of the manure is very light brown, like the color of dry cardboard, and you can see some nuggets here and there that have a white, powdery coating on them of firefang.
Hope that helps,

right on guys thanks for all the replies, i'm thinking of using ajax's grow as a basis.
unfortunately I AM in the deep city but hopefully if i get a break here soon I should be able to afford some coir, and some verm, which seems to be all I need.
I have a little verm but probably not enough...
anyway, thanks everyone, gonna get on this asap.

My two cents:
Go get horse manure. You're looking for the well-aged stuff, but you can get lumps and nuggets and let nature take its course on 'em.
Just tell them it's for a garden. Manure is a wonderful soil amendment.
If it's nuggets, spread it out on a tarp and let some rain leech out the extra nutrients. (It's too hot without leeching)
Then, after it's rained on and reasonably dried, break it up (into "grass clippings" type stuff) and let it dry in the sun.
Next, pasteurize it and make a monotub. I don't personally feel its necessary to do anything fancy with horse manure. It's a good contam-resistant substrate.
Edit: sorry- I'm manic today. Didn't read your reply of 1 hour ago...looks like you might not get H-poo. Anyway, if you can, it's awesome stuff, and not gross like we tend to think it would be.
