Check out Air's album "Moon Safari" ... fucking AMAZING female vocals
also Bonobo features female vocalist Andreya Triana:
I particularly avoid music with lyrics while tripping unless the vocalist uses their voice as an amazing instrument. I have no interest in lyrics while tripping and usually find them to be trite and uninteresting, or otherwise distracting. I think that instrumental can communicate a lot more than even the most skillfully crafted lyrics.
And generally I try to avoid any music with abrasive or grating sounds. This includes most rock, rap, pop.... pretty much anything that isn't ambient/psychedelic music.
Although I do like dubstep/glitch, but unless I'm tripping at a festy or a rave or something then I won't put it on. That kind of music really requires a whole context/atmosphere for it to get me going.
Of course there's a lot of dubstep that is really mellow and ambient:

Yeah I mean...
They've been saying classical music is the best for learning forever
I tend to think jazz is good for that too, in some of its forms
About metal being like classical music. Maybe in the structure. I don't really know because I can't stand listening to metal long enough to analyze song structure. If it doesn't sound good, I don't like it, those are the music rules I follow
I'm not even a big jazz head but I know enough to know that it is VERY complicated, and I don't think most metal even begins to scratch the surface of the musical world in which jazz resides. Maybe metal makes up for its lack of musical diversity with infinitely complex structures. I don't know or care because it doesn't suit my taste, at all. I already tried iron maiden and I didn't like it. I'm fairly certain I'd feel the same way about your other suggestions too. I don't like that loud, fast screaming shit, its just ridiculous. Don't take it personally metal heads, I know you've been chasing that hardcore image since you were a wee boy and you can't stop now (wink wink just kidding don't take a shit just yet).

i suppose i avoid anything that i dislike sober. i guess all of that screamo metal/____core stuff would probably be pretty torturous to listen to while high on psychedelics. as much as i like electronic music, big room "electro" house sucks to me as well as deadmau5. aside from that it's anything goes as long as it's good and interesting.

Just bare with me and listen to that song. It is complex as hell at some parts, and has wonderful melodic soft parts.

It's really personal preference. I personally don't like music at all when I'm tripping (In my limited experience).

BTB&M huh...pretty good. From the band name I would have thought it's some of that newfangled crap, but they have skill and a cool sound. (Can't take the screaming and rage, but I can appreciate the technical stuff)
How 'bout Wintersun? Ahh, viking ships! I have to admit I've had a few good winter trips with my buddies blasting their album. Kinda feels right when it's 10 degrees and everything's frozen.

Now, back to non-metal stuff- Can is also one of my favorite bands. They have quite a few albums, and work a wide variety of musical styles and ideas.

Wintersun is pretty sweet. I dig their guitarists. Can't stand the vocalist, or the lyrics.
How about Opeth? Anyone? Anyone? Also. I recommend listening to Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull. It's a 40 minute song/album.

Okay, I did.
Here's my take.
The soft melodic parts. They are decent. But nothing amazing. Maybe on par with zeppelin or something? Not jazz geniuses though. I do give the guitarists that - they are melodic. But the vocalist sucks. Their guitar tone is decent for how over-distorted it is. Its just not my sound man. Yes those guys are talented, for sure. The 7 time signature riff is cool but not exactly original. The cookie monster screaming and double bass drum shit is hilarious, thanks for the laugh

Here is one of my favorite bands, but this song was transposed into midi/8 bit nintendo sounding music. It allows you to hears whats going on without the distortion and screaming... you can clearly hear the classical influence in the phrasing and structure of the piece. Obviously metal is percussion based music, but the good stuff is clearly rooted in classical.
I don't expect you to love it or anything, but maybe it will give you some insight into WHY people like metal.
Edit, adding this one to... cause its fucking classic...
