April 16, 1943
Dr. Albert Hofmann accidentally discovers the psychedelic properties of LSD.
Hofmann, a Swiss chemist, was researching the synthesis of a lysergic acid compound, LSD-25, when he inadvertently absorbed a bit through his fingertips, experiencing the first ever LSD trip. Intrigued by the stimulating effects on his perception, Hofmann decided further exploration was warranted. Three days later he ingested 250 micrograms of LSD, embarking on the first intentional acid trip.
In his autobiography, LSD, My Problem Child, Hofmann remembered his discovery this way:
"I was forced to interrupt my work in the laboratory in the middle of the afternoon and proceed home, being affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated-like condition, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some two hours this condition faded away."
The experience led Hofmann to begin experimenting with other hallucinogens and he became an advocate of their use, in both the arenas of psychoanalysis and personal growth. He was critical of LSD’s casual use by the counterculture during the '60s, accusing rank amateurs of hijacking the drug he referred to as "medicine for the soul" without understanding either its positive or negative effects.
Hofmann was equally critical of what he considered society’s knee-jerk rejection of a drug that he believed is mostly beneficial and deserving of continued research. "I think that in human evolution it has never been as necessary to have this substance LSD," he said at a symposium in 2006, marking the centennial of his birth. "It is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be."
Hofmann died of a heart attack at his home near Basel, Switzerland, in 2008. He was 102.
-------------------- "Through my LSD experience and my new picture of reality, I became aware of the wonder of creation, the magnificence of nature and of the animal and plant kingdom. I became very sensitive to what will happen to all this and all of us. - Albert Hofmann

Thank you good sir!
while you may have felt at times you created a new party drug, countless numbers of people have discovered new ideas about themselves/the world around them and incorporated these findings into their everyday lives for the better!

he absorbed a unknown but small amount through his fingertips so i'm sure that had something to do with duration.
on 4/19 you'll read a post by veggie about how he experimented and dosed himself with 250ug (what he thought was a threshold dose but is actually pretty heatty) and fried his brains

I'm going for a commemorative bicycle ride on the 19th. Homage to the Hoff!
-------------------- Reductio ad absurdum -deducing that everybody knows nothing without substituting a facade of concrete logic for diaphanous suppositions. Unfortunately, without an inherent truth to life, it would be impossible to hinder free thought and forcefully impose surreptitious ideologies which ultimately infarcts the portion of the brain responsible for applying any work not rewarded by monetary gain. That would be bad. Contemplating counter intuitive concepts can culminate with capricious creativity or cerebral cessation. Conceivably crazy, yet clever, coherent concepts challenge copulatory clichés, criminal cabals and certainty contrived of conjectures. Cognition or coagulation, choose conscientiously.

I really hate that filthy ignorant peasants the world over think themselves better qualified to speak of the rights and wrongs of "drugs" (to use that corrupted and now near-meaningless phrase) than educated and great people like Albert Hoffman and Alexander Shulgin etc. As though such street urchins know anything about anything and their opinions or feelings matter a toss or warrant the use of precious time for their consideration.
I just wanted to say that because it probably can't be said too much and it annoys me to no end. Democracy is a damned cancer. There, maybe even some of you won't like that but I said it
