It's hard to justify paying $60 for a game when it came for free in the Orange Box...

It's a much longer and more developed game this time around. I paid $30 for Orange Box, anyway, and I thought of it more like $6 per game.

maybe but still for $30 for orange box, you got half life, half life ep 1, half life ep 2, portal, and team fortress
now it's $60 for just, and maybe a longer and more developed, but still $60 for just portal 2.
idk. anyway let me know how it plays. the graphics LOOK awesome, but w/e

I was going to get it until I saw the price tag. That's way too high, at least to me right now, unless the game is incredibly longer than the prequel.

portal 1 was just an xbl arcade game, that is why it was so short. portal 2 is a full game, it deserves a full price. if you don't like paying that for games then flash your drive and then it only cost $1.25 for new games (the price of a blank disk).

these are dual layer, not single and the cheap ones coaster and burn your drives up quicker. i know it doesn't make sense, but the more expensive ones are actually cheaper in the long run.

I don't know what you mean by flash my drive. If the reviews and articles about portal 2 end up being really good I'll probably buy it, but the gameplay time vs cost was an issue for me because when I beat portal 1 I was like wtf... that's it?
You think it's at least 10 hours + of gameplay?

Originally released with the Orange Box, PC,PS3&360
"Valve; having no idea of the success of Portal, the Box provided it a "safety net" via means of these other games. Portal was kept to a modest length in case the game did not go over well with players."
Portal 2 so far has made me laugh a few times. Some pretty funny moments for sure and I only played it for about 30-45 minutes last night.
It took me a long time to get around to playing the first Portal and I kept thinking how is a puzzle game so great? Well I found out and I loved the shit out of that game. I have a feeling I will enjoy this one just as much.

this one is def worth pirating or buying. it is a full length game, single and multiplayer are nuts. it is hard to know how long it will take u to beat both the single and multiplayer, but it is well worth it. this might be the goty.

Better not be GOTY, we still have the new Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex 3 and Battlefield 3.
Actually I am kind of feeling that the game is slow...
I am around chapter 6 or 7, I forget. I just started playing with all 3 new things at least at that point.
I guess I feel it is just not as creepy or ominous as the first one and some of the levels are just.... added in. Kind of to get from point a to b in the story you have to go through this large area with really no puzzle, and just looking for a place to pop a Portal.
Maybe for me it is just because it is not new and wonderful for me. So far I rate it a $40 game. That might change.
--
And that's that, time to uninstall, I don't see me wanting to replay that one again. Well, glad I didn't pay for it.

Comparing the 2 games, both were insanely fun. I haven't done much multiplayer yet in portal 2 but the single player campaign was reasonably long for a puzzle game.
The quality of the game is what really makes it though. At no point was I bored with the levels. More like the robots are talking and I'm looking miles away at distant objects of incredible detail that I will never get close to, yet they haven't been under developed.
Re: the price of the game. I had 60 bucks from a friend paying me back. With the length of time I spent in single player I dunno if it's worth the price tag. Once the level building tools are released.... possibly different story.
Without ruining the story for those not playing it yet, Moonshot.

If you want a hint, and I am thinking of the correct level.
You must go up up and up with the white goo
I also forget about one other thing since it is not used a lot.
And this will give it away from that point. Gravity/momentum
The levels that piss me off are the really easy ones where I just forget about one aspect of the game and after 30 minutes go duh.
Some levels just require less thinking.

Yeah... there was really no challenge in that. I think I died a crap load of times in the first one but this time around I just destroyed on the last battle.
Didn't get to play MP or Co-OP. I hope that adds a lot more to the game.
I think my only real grip with the game that really bothered me was the long areas of just running and running. Then getting to some spot where there was no puzzle. You just had to look and look for something to shoot. But again, those levels where so well done, I can see why most everyone does not mind that.
I am wondering, I heard the game was supposed to be made a different way with other technology which also took place in the past with no portals. I wonder is 3 will be a prequel. http://scrawlfx.com/2011/04/portal-2-was-originally-a-game-without-portals Or it is just some clever marketing for an app.

I never played it, only seen videos and read reviews. But I think Valve has done a great job with Portal 2 gameplay wise, because the experience differs vastly from other games.
Valve actually does a lot of experiments with incorporating bilogical impulses into gameplay, like experimenting with capturing players eye-movement, which was done for both, L4D, Alien Swarm and P2. The actual incorporation of physical impulses into gameplay is still a fantasy, but P2-s maps are influenced greatly from these experiments. You actually have to look around and do more work with yor eyes than with your hands, its not just mindless impulse shooting.
Xbox360 is getting old, and I am pretty sure next generation console will incorporate a camera and motion tracking. Valve is great pursuer of this and no wonder they were dissapointed on the PS3 appearance since it was too late with advanced graphics -- people were thinking about new types of gameplay more.
Now Valve promised a free developers kit for P2 in summer. It is obvious, otherwise the co-op would grow really boring really fast. BUT, this also means that we will not hear about Half Life 3 either... Go die, Portal fans, krrrr.

Yeah no, it's called a gimmick bro. Also, Valve wouldn't alienate their primary user base, PC gamers. Sorry consoleman, come back when you have more than 512 RAM. PS3 graphics advanced, lol, you should check my GTX460. Cool thing is, Source games are legacy style so they run one damn near any hardware, even my old coreduo+8600 box can max Portal 2's settings with 2x AA (smooth 60+fps). Valve realizes that through clever marketing and convenient distribution the PC market is a goldmine, and they're lining their pockets.
I leave games when I connect with PS3 players because it becomes immediately apparent they're fumbling around with analog sticks, which is kinda lame when you need your partner to pull a trick timing and he misses over and over. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy console gaming, but this whole cross platform thing? You guys better hope there aren't any competitive shooters released, or you're going to get wrecked by people who seem like they must practically have aim-bots. My hand only has to move < 1cm to do a full 180, and through years of neckbeardery I can still aim accurately at that sensitivity, your highest stick setting will never keep up with a high resolution mouse.
I actually kinda cant wait, It'll be the penultimate opportunity to shove a sock in them. Watch, I bet if they ever do have such a game they'll have to force autoaim (sticky xhairs) on the console players just to keep them remotely competitive. Even then people with WASD will be skirting corners and doing other stuff you can't do with analog sticks.

I was watching my friend play this right after it was released (I'm a big fan of Portal 1, but my gaming PC is out of order for a bit so I didn't bother playing it on his PC. I'll wait 'til I can eat the whole cake)
WHAT'S WHITE THE orange and blue circles showing where a portal is around the corner? That was really bugging me and it didn't appear to have an on/off switch.
Know what I'm talking about? It's a good function to have I guess, but it takes away from the real feel.. Considering there's no other on screen display in the game.
I look forward to playing this, but that on screen "portal locator" was taking away from the experience a bit.

Was it really that bothersome? IMO the puzzles in #2 get a little more complex and it's nice to have an image of where exactly your portals are at all times.
The main character is obviously not fully human anyway. So she has some HUD elements, so what? It's no less realistic than the portals themselves.

It just looks ...[it should be an option, and it just looks] pixeled and out of place. I was baked and it was bothering me.
If it more transparent and looked how a robot would see it.. maybe had some effect applied to it.. I don't know, it just looked out of place to me.
I'm sure when I sit down and play the game for real i'll get used to it.
I felt it worth mentioning, since it had not been mentioned yet.

Had a lot of fun with this game, but didn't seem like a $60 game at all. Haven't tried co-op yet I'm guessing that'd make it more worth it. The game seemed really empty/boring after a while just solving puzzles over and over with 2 buttons. Most of the puzzles had only 1 place to put your portal thus were really easy :S There's a lot of pictures on the walls that tell you exactly what to do and kinda ruin it as well... I'd put it on the level of like world of goo, plants vs zombies, or other $10 games, only with a much better graphics engine.

If the co-op has been explained somewhere else just tell me to stop being lazy, but I'm writing a lit review and have no time (semester ends Weds. THANK FUCK!!!).
Have any of you used co-op or is it multiplayer versus? If so is it fun? My buddy raves about the game and has a stupid # of hours playing it. I'm almost hooked but $60 is what I pay for my eXtreme cable internet.

Fucking couldn't have said it any better myself. Yeah I'd like to see a console even try to touch Battlefield 3 or Metro2033 or Batman AA or any number of a long list of games I could name, that will only get longer as time goes on. The disparity between consoles and PC games is becoming bigger and bigger every day.
Camera and motion tracking? They already have that. It's called Kinect brah. It sucks though and has very limited applications. It IS a gimmick and will probably last about as long as Virtual Game Boy did. The next level shit is 3D gaming. and 3d Surround, Which requires the right card(s), special glasses and a special TV/monitor, and which I don't see console coming anywhere near. I like consoles myself personally, but I don't really like to compare consoles and PCs because they are definitely NOT equals. I talk to extreme gamers every single day, I don't think most of them even own a console. Who needs to when you have an SR-2 w/ dual xeon westmeres @ 4.0ghz, 3x 580s and 24GB of RAM?

Sadly the consoles are starting to hold up the PC games. I also can't think of a single game that could use 8 cores(or would that be 16, don't pay attention to zeon procs) and 24 gigs of ram.... but I bet it would play BF3 dandy with 3 30"+ monitors. "I said God Damn"
I just wish they would release a damn mouse and keyboard for consoles and have games that supported that. I prefer my PC but I grew up on consoles. Sadly i can't use those analog joysticks for the life of me, didn't grow up with those.

Yeah the gaming industry is always about a generation behind PC hardware. But games like BFBC2 and others make best use of 4-6 cores. You are not going to run that on a console. Future game releases are going to be even more demanding to keep up with current hardware. BF3 is just one example that's coming out this year. And yeah the 3x 580s or whatever best comes into play when running 3D surround on multiple monitors as you NEED that extra memory for frame buffering

Note: SHADOWRUN was apparently a mutliplatform FPS. it also apparently sucked, so it's not too relevant. Figured I'd mention it, even though I didn't bother trying it. I'll let the 16bit version be my last memory of it.
