ID Request (amanita muscaria?)
    #14299336 - 04/16/11 02:09 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat: This was picked today from a pine plantation forrest in northern Victoria (Australia).
The soil was dark and can be seen at the bottom of the stem; there were quite alot of these mushrooms growing, especially where the ground was covered in the pine tree pins (if thats what you call them)

Gills: the gills are white although i cant tell you much more about them as the mushroom has not opened completely.

Stem: Thick white solid stem but on the larger and more mature of these mushrooms, the stem seems to be thinner at the top than the base.

Spore print color: I have not taken any spore prints. Please recommend if i should and i will do it but i need to know before the mushroom dries up.

Bruising: no bruising visible

Other information: I have noticed that the mature mushrooms in the area this was picked from, tend to age/mature differently.
Some remain all red with only a very slight orange edge, while others are literally orange and the mushroom almost becomes inverted (such as it could hold water if it rained)..

Although i didnt take a clear photo of the bottom of the stem, there are two clear 'rings' at the base.

Are these active? Is this a Amanita Muscaria? If so, is it a bit too small to have any noticible effect?

ANY advice would be great.
Thank you

That pic is a amanita m.

At the bottom of the stem there are(and should allways) be three or more little grooves. Take a close look and you can see them.
The orange ones are probably the same and are just matured ones........
Make sure you prepare them or they will make you sick...

Amanita Muscaria - I wouldn't recommend eating them to trip, go find some Subaeruginosa instead for a much better ride.

Ive had a few good (and bad) trips on P.Sub. and wouldnt mind trying a A.Muscaria for a change, although this is a bit too small for any trip in my opinion (i could be wrong though)?!

The trips are more intoxicating, it's alot more like being drunk and triping to me.
I don't know about the dose though....

Thank you for identifying this for me.

Are there ANY other similar looking species which grow in central-northern Victoria, Australia, that have the two rings at the bottom of the stem that could be poisonous?

There aren't any look alikes that I know of that grow in pine plantations in Victoria.

But if you're still uncertain just check for:
> colour (red cap with white warts)
> annulus/ partial veil present
> concentric rings above the bulbous base

Like the others have said, if you plan to consume them read up on the effects and preparation first.
