Whats the best Substrate
    #14298729 - 04/15/11 11:38 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Ive been growing mushrooms with brf cakes for almost a year and a half now, ive gotten pretty good at keeping contaminants out. I was wondering is there a better substrate mix than verm and brown rice flour or is brown rice flour the best food for the myc? I just want to explore and experiment so any feedback would be awesome.

there's a list of additives a mile long.
gypsum and coffee are the most popular atm.
but brf is best edit: >for pf tek< /edit because cup for cup, it's among the most
nutritious, and cheapest of the most nutritious, there is.
although, from what little i know about nutrition, quinoa might
be better. but it's like $12 for a little bag.

IMHO, the best substrates for cubensis mushroom mycelium are bulk substrates that are comprised of a mix of properly pasteurized, brought to field capacity, mix of organic materials.  Such as, field aged cow and horse manure, reptile substrate coco-coir, and wheat straw.  I also never not add gypsum at 3% by volume of the substrate being prepared.  Gypsum adds calcium and sulfur and is beneficial through out all stages of mushroom growth.

IMHO coco coir is the easiest, most resilient bulk substrate.
