Pressure cooker help
    #14296437 - 04/15/11 04:18 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have a presto 23 qt pressure cooker. I just moved into a apartment that has a gas stove.  Its been sitting on the burner for about 30 mins im waiting for the gauge to hit 15 psi and its not moving a bit.  I did the water flick test and it didnt evaporate instantly but I dont want all my water to evaporate and blow up this new apartment complex.  I just turned it down to low.  The pressure tab is up and theres steam coming from the psi gauge.  I dont want contams but im a bit worried.  Help!

Have you used a pressure cooker before?

My procedure.

1. Fill water to the 2" mark in my PC.
2. I place this metal riser on the bottom to keep the jars slightly elevated from the bottom of the pot.
3. Load the pot with my jars.
4. Place and secure PC lid with the weight OFF.
5. Turn the fire on High.  It takes 14 minutes for mine to start boiling. You can tell its boiling because I see/hear a lot of steam coming out of the nozzle the weight sits on.
6. I place the weight on the nozzle where the steam is coming out of.
7. From 0 to 15 psi it takes 12 minutes.
8. I let it hit 16 psi and then turn the fire to low.  it holds at 15 for 90 mins.  (you will have to watch/tinker with your burner to make sure it holds at 15psi.)

Hope this helps

There was a rubber cap on top of the lid covering up a hole.  Do you think that was my problem?

1. If steam is escaping via the pressure gauge u need to replace it.

or

2. If steam is escaping where the lid meets the pot then u need to replace the rubber gasket / seal on the lid.

3. There should be a small little rubber stopper somewhere on the top of your lid.  It should have a small little pin that moves pretty freely.  The idea of the pin is to stay open when there is no pressure.  Once pressure builds up it press up against the pin and into the rubber stopper.  That seals your pot and thats when  your pressure will build up.  If this is broken it might now allow for the pressure to build up properly.

If I had to guess it sounds like your pressure gauge is broken.  You can purchase a replacement one pretty cheap on line.  If you do get one, you should also get the gasket sealing ring, and over pressure plug all together.

Armature mistake guys.  ALL this was caused by me forgetting to put the rubber between the gauge and the bolt:evil:  Damn,  I'll never get the "trusted cultivator" tag now!
