I wanted to see what fan dried looked like because I tried fan drying a few years ago and they schriveled bad and ugly and smelled like wet dogs ass! I want to use dehydrator with heat element, but do I need to cut stem from cap? I want to dry whole.
Like when I bought them on the street, they had neat, clean appearance

I don't think it's required to remove the stem from the cap. Just expect to wait a bit longer for them to be completely dry.
I left my shrooms in tact for my first few runs through the dehydrator, they just took a lot longer to get completely dry in the middle/thickest parts of the stem. I now remove the cap (for printing) then slice the stems in half in order to speed things up a bit.

I do not see any. Also, I wanted to know what the difference in appearance is in different dry methods. I just don't want them to end up smelly and thread like.

I use an electric dehydrator and dry them whole. I even customized it to fit larger fruits by cutting out half of one tray. I have been able to fit my largest mushies in here. The smell means that they were not very dry at all. They can feel dry on the outside and still contain lots of moisture. The moisture will re-distribute itself upon cooling and the mushies will feel "soggy," again. I will usually put them in a baggie and check them after an hour or so to be sure, often times, they go back in. They can never be too dry. Good luck.

That makes more sense than what I did. I just cut out all the mesh of two of the stackable trays. I had too many big mushies from one of my monos.
Guess I will just have to buy another dehydrator, or more stackable trays.
