ID Request, East Texas
    #14295383 - 04/15/11 12:23 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

There was a hard rain/hail last night so I went looking for shrooms and found a group of 5 fairly large mushrooms growing out of a pile of wood mulch.

Only have a webcam sorry

The caps are tan-golden brown, depressed to umbonate

Adnexed gill attachment

I haven't noticed any bruising coloration

I'm taking a spore print now, and I'll post it later if these aren't easy to identify.

Thanks guys.

Looks like possibly a Pluteus of some sort.  See if the spore print is pinkish.

My first instinct was Lepiota... But a picture of the cap would clear that up nicely.

I'm leaning towards Pluteus....

so how can you assume it's not Volvariella if there's no image of the bulb?

For me, the small peek we do get at the cap color is too brown for most Volvariella I've seen.  They usually lean more towards grey or if anything a very light tan (in age).  Also, Volvariella are usually conical to plane - I don't think I've ever seen one turn upwards on the cap margin like this.

That said, Volvariella was not a bad guess based on stem and gill color -

Absolutely. And good point about the Volvariella by pouihi. Could equally well be. But since we probably won't know, my money says Pluteus.

 I'd put my money on Volvariella sp... It's what first came to mind when I saw it.

yes, the quality is not great though I was expecting it could more salmon, I've seen some in which the cap can look slightly turned upwards, probably old specimens and poorly treated.

I am a mushroom id enthusiast but have only done it for 2 seasons (were I live is usually so hot and dry that it is extremely hard to find mushrooms in Spring/Summer), I don't think I have ever id a Pluteus so I know little about them, I'll check them out.

Thanks for explaining

I see a lot more Pluteus sp. than Volvariella where I am, so my first thought was Pluteus.

Agreed it could possibly yet be a Volvariella.  In particular Pluteus (often) have a scaly stipe.  This one looks pretty darn smooth...  I still lean more towards Pluteus myself though.

Whats so funny is that in person, all of us would know right off the bat which mushroom this was.  Especially if we could see its base or cap clearly.  Without that piece of the puzzle intact, who really knows.

the spore print was golden brown to brown

Here's a pic of a cap, sorry I really can't get any detail with this webcam.

It's still a little dirty with woodchips and whatnot. Should I wash them off completely? Throw them in the fridge or oven dry them?

Sorry I'm new.

Neither?  They are not active, thats for sure.  As for edibility, neither Pluteus or Volvariella are known for thier flavor.  I'd dump 'em.  There is always next time.

You're right, thanks.

Though the spore print wasn't pink at all, which still leaves me wondering what kind of shrooms they were.

Agreed, both of the likely suspects would have been a nice peachy pink shade.
