Pc ing contaminated wbs (grains to wet? pics at bottom)
    #14294784 - 04/15/11 09:49 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Man I wish my cam worked but defiantly have a bacterial in some of my grains.
A little bit on the over wet/ simmered to long side.

When you guys pc your bad jars do you put foil on them or is it sorta non issue since most of it is going in the trash (outside after 30 minute at 15psi ).?

I have always done it with it on but im out of foil and want these out of my house today. Might have to run to the store before the rain comes.

Thank you in advance.

I think I need a better simmer tek then I got now. I let the water come to a boil turn it down to a simmer and let it cool for a few minutes  then add my wbs.

Just hope my grain Lc wasn't contemned  I did 24 jars last night :picard:

After the soak, leave the WBS in the same water & bring to a boil. Once boiling, dump in strainer & toss till exterior has steam dried.

PC for 60 minutes @ 15 PSI. what type of filter media do you use for your lids? If SFDs I never use foil over my lids.

Its tyvek  with self healing Rvc ports. I think the filter got a bit wet during the pc'ing process. Hence causing the contam, .

I dump the water and give it a rinse in between the simmer and soak.

I let the grains dry for 30 minutes in a strainer then 30 more on some newspaper.

It seams like that way the grains would be even more wet.?
How long are your soaks. and simmer times?

Soak 12-14 hours
Simmer 20 minutes.

Figured I'd cut down on the simmer time and not bring the water to a boil first.

WBS Prep

Rinse, rinse, rinse & rinse some more, until the water is clear
Dump in a bucket w/ gypsum
Let soak for 12-24 hours
Dump (w/ the same water from the soak, cuz it has gypsum & I like saving water) In your pot

Bring the water+WBS to a BOIL (not simmer) watching for burst kernels
Dump in a strain once boiling
toss WBS in strainer to steam dry. I do that for about 30-60 minutes. Or just leave it in the strainer & go get some  & come back 4 hours later, & it's fine. When loading my jars, I only have a few kernels that will stick to the spoon, which is mostly due to them being burst. I get about 5-10% burst kernels all the time. they don't bother me & I don't pick out the floaters. Just the pieces of wood that float. Leave the sunflower seed

Bacteria is a moisture problem, as in too much moisture on the exterior of your kernels. By simmering & not boiling, your WBS is retaining too much excess moisture on the exterior of the kernels & allowing for pooling water in the bottom of your jars.

also, invest in some synthetic filter disks. They're 12 for $12 on everythingmushrooms.com. You don't have to use foil w/ them, and they're the Bees-knees for filter media.

 no one should be simmering grains. You bring them to a BOIL after the soak & dump once the boil hits. It's the final step in full hydration & the best way to guarantee that the exterior of the grain is dry.

If you boiled after your soak, your drain time would be around an hour maximum.

I think looking closer at my wbs it looks like I overcooked it. Those jars that were contaminated had many more split grains then the ones who did not.

I got my camera working after I had them in the pc .

But I did get this shot of my mini mono needed to open the bag for a second (I open the plastic bags every 3 days or so )
Wbs to  coir/verm spawn 4 days ago

I'll be doing more wbs this week or next depending on how my grain lc turned out.  I will try it your way next time. Thank you

Ps no pooling water at the bottom

interesting about the water. It's not the burst kernels, because I inoculated two jars that had 90% burst kernels & they didn't contam. I actually G2G'd them & they've provided me w/ about 5 monos worth of KSSS. lol.

Who knows, it may have just been  :magichat: bacteria. lol

Well I dont know im review everything ill post a picture of my jars in a bit battery is dead now.

Two(Three if you include ms) other possibilities are my cheap pc . I did emailed the company and asked them the psi sittings ( wasn't in the Manuel )
They said about 15 psi :picard:
Shot them one back what does about 15 mean 10 12 15?

The other is since I am doing quart jars of wbs I forgot to add the extra 30 minutes of pc'ing time. ( I did 60 minutes instead of 90 like i should have done.)

The jars were from a ms syringe so from a print I didnt label.
Guess ill find out more in the next 3 days.

I do all my work in a gb btw too.

yea looks to be. A lot of burst kernels too. Is that cracked corn? Try and get the WBS w/out cracked corn.

Also, make sure the tyvek is on the exterior of the lid. You don't want it to get wet when you shake the WBS, as that'll cause contams, too.

Yes it is cracked corn didnt say it had it in there on the bag.
Tyvek is on the outside after I noc em i put a coffee filter on top just as an added safety net.
The holes (besides inoc port) are only 1/16 so I shouldnt have got any wetness to the filter from there.

Well hopefully I'll get something out of this.  Those were done with the grain LC so that might have added a bit of wetness.

How do I keep the grains from cracking so much was only like 10-15 percent before pc'ing

Looks like Im picking up better wbs.

Dumping your cold, soaked grains into a pot of water that's simmering will burst a lot of kernels, differentiating temperatures (like glass.)

That's why I say to have the WBS in the water on the stove then turn on the gas for the burner to get those babies to a boil.

I use Ace Hardware brand WBS 20lbs for $7

How many GE holes do you have? I'd recommend just buying 2 packs of 100mm SFDs from everythingmushrooms. I bought 4 when I first started & haven't used all of them yet & have over 80 jar lids done. :2cents:

You can check my lid tek in my signature if you have any questions about my lid design.

Also, a coffee filter isn't doing anything but keeping off dog hair & large dust particles. Mold floats right through that shit.

Ok that does make a lot of sense ( the grains being like glass) I still get spawn but my contam ratio was high (like 25-35 percent way higher then my cakes).

Yep its Ace hardware WBS why does mine have corn in it? Also mines 2 bucks more  :crankey: . Maybe they changed there recipe.? I do live in a dense urban area.

for my pints I have 2 GE holes
for my quarts I have 4. GE

Yeah I've looked at your tek before and it sounds good. I will for sure try it out at a later date. (need to buy a new light first) .

Yeah the coffee filter is just a dust cover. I have 2 layers of tyvek and  the Rvc ports are covered with micro tape after I noc.

Your GE, sounds to be a bit low. I'd add another hole or two.

Also, the ingredients are listed on the little piece of paper stapled to the bottom of the bag. Get the red bag. I forget what the other color is but that's the one w/ cracked corn. It may be purple, but I :justdontknow: ATM. I'll know tomorrow, because I gotta go pick some more up.

As for lights, I now use 4' floros, but I used to use the standard desk lamp bulbs rated @ 6500K. They worked great & were $10 for 2 that last for over 1k hours.
