In vitro pins in a 90% colonized BRF jar! HELP!! (Pics)
    #1429373 - 04/04/03 04:21 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Hey,

I found a PF jar on the street that is incubating at 84F in darkness since 2 months and its 90% colonized.  The strain is Tapalpa.  I can now see something like 5 or 6 pins (all in the same spot) of cute little caps and a tin stem that are growing on the side of the jar.  That's really unexpected and since i'm still a noob at this, I just don't know what to do!!! should I put this cake in a terrarium right now even if its not fully colonized???

The jar was flipped 2 weeks ago cuz colonization was getting slower and i'm sure it will take at least another 10 days to fully colonize if I keep the cake in the jar.

I'll put a pic in the next hour to show you this, that's so cute but hey, i want to do the right thing for these babies...

I'm looking for some help here!!!!

thanks for quick answers!!

My friend would just let it finish colonizing. Those pins will still grow; they'll just be a bit cramped.

Ok thanks.  I was about to birth the cake but I will wait then.. Here are some pics!  Sorry for the quality.

I just realized why it did that.  The incubator is near an important source of light and the rubbermaid doesn't block all the photons

That last picture shows the part of the jar that still need to be colonized.

thx!

Will they continue growing and growing and get something like 6 inches long or they will stay approx. like that until they are birth?

They'll keep growing and get all smashed and ugly looking, but they'll be just as potent. If you do a seach for Hippie's Neglect tek at Nan's Nook you can see some pictures of cakes fruiting in the jars.

dunno for sure, but some friends of mine noticed that pins don't form too often unless there is a lot of light.... my advice to you: store colonising jars in a dark place

Make sure the holes in the lid don't have tape on them. Tell your friend to incubate his jars in a darker place or not to check them so much.

chances are u will lose some yield on ur first "flush" (which wont really be a flush because they will all grow at dif times) i'd recommend that u just birth it and cut the bottom/uncolonized part with something sterile until all thats left is mycelium covered subctrate and then its alllll goooood:):)

It will be hard to cut the uncolonized part cuz, as shown in last picture, the 10% left is on one side of the jar from top to bottom. I guess i'll have to wait until full colonization.

Dim, there wasn't a lot of light coming in, just enough to see what's inside the incubator (assuming you can sit in the closed incubator and look around)  .

Based on this experience, I would say that the Tapalpa strains requires a minimum of light to pin!

dude i take my jars out and put them in the chamber with some times the hole bottom not covered at all. never had a cake get mold or even anything strange on it. it will just grow fluffy but thats at my enviroment though but i think youll be just fine birthing it. next time take away that light and u wont have that problem.

Here's a little update for those who are interested.

One of the lill shroom grew to 4 inches in the last 2 days and 3 of em aborted and started to rot. I had to birth the cake and remove the aborts.

I actually tasted them cuz hey, these are my really first self-growned shrooms!!

thanks for the advices. I will post a pic in the next day cuz I'm suspecting the tall one to stop growing (cap seems to get darker) but I can't be sure.

Now they are pretty bruised due to the birthing.

thanks for your help!

That's how it looks like now. Once again, sorry for poor pics quality.

First two pics show the biggest in vitro that was just put in an improvised terrarium since risks of contamination due to unfinished colonization of the cake. Are you able to tell if this shroom is an abort?

That last one tries to show all the littles pins that grew in the last days.

yeah, I got those. I birthed and treated it like a pre-flush. The real flush was amazing.

I guess you had many aborts on that pre-flush?

Did you actually birth a cake not fully colonize? If so, everything went well?
