Drug sting leads to chase, bridge leap
TROY — Authorities arrested a man who jumped off the Congress Street Bridge in an attempt to flee federal authorities who set up a drug sting at the Rensselaer County Airport.
According to Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent In Charge James Burns, 44-year-old Raymond Hernandez, of Slate Hill in Orange County, gave an undercover agent $200,000 in exchange for what he thought was 25 kilos of cocaine at the airport in Poestenkill.
When he saw the Rensselaer County SWAT team approaching he got in his Jeep Cherokee, "broke containment," and took off through a swampy area at the end of the runway, Burns said. Police in unmarked cars attempted to follow the 4x4 but ended up getting stuck in the swamp, Burns said.
"It’s unfortunate he broke containment but these things happen and we had a plan in place to account for if it did happen," Burns said.
A DEA aircraft was watching from the sky as a host of law enforcement followed at a safe distance on the ground. As Hernandez crossed the Congress Street Bridge, he lost control of his Jeep and smashed it into the median.
"And the next thing we know he jumped in the river," Burns said.
Burns said the agents in the sky watched him in the river so there was no losing him and he was arrested on the Watervliet side of the Hudson. He suffered a fractured pelvis and a fractured rib.
"He was moving pretty good when he got out of the car so if I had to guess it was the 80-foot jump from the bridge deck to the water" that did the damage, Burns said. "It’s unfortunate he got hurt but thankfully no innocent people were injured."
Upon his release from the hospital Hernandez will face a host of federal drug trafficking charges.
The arrest comes after a five-month investigation involving the DEA, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
Burns said undercover agents have purchased a number of weapons over the course of the investigation and knew Hernandez wanted to get into drug trafficking as well. When he got up enough money to make the deal, the agents set up the sting.
Burns said Hernandez has an extensive record of dealing drugs and at least one federal narcotics arrest.
"He’s not going to see the light of day for a while," Burns said.

What a bunch of faggots. They lured him in to making bank and then tricked him into buying drugs. Entrapment much?
