Getting a start on gourmet/medicinal mushrooms in Australia
    #14270443 - 04/11/11 01:41 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi all!

I'm in Australia and currently growing Shiitake on eucalyptus sawdust. Having enjoyed some success I'm looking to try my hand at varieties like Reishi and Maitake. My problem is it seems difficult to get spawn (live mycelium) or spore syringes through customs and I can't seem to find retailers of this sort of thing here in Australia. I also seem unable to find much on gourmet/medicinal spore prints beyond Oysters, such as through bemushroomed.com.

There must be some Aussies on here who have faced the same issue? I'm hoping someone can give me some advice or point me in the right direction. Any help much appreciated.

Although it's hard to get fungi strains in to aus, some people do do it.  Not sure how but they are cunning and have friends OS who are prepared to help.

This forum has an incredible wealth of knowledge and a preparedness to share.  So lurk for a while and follow a few topics/debates, fire off some questions.  I guess it's less painful to listen to the advicw of others than to make your own frustrating mistakes.

there's a reason they don't allow it, and i actually tend to agree with them.  Find what grows local, and get your spores/cultures from there, i think your country is actually 1 of the few smart ones out there willing to try to do what it does.  It might be slightly flawed, but there's good reason behind it as your history would show.

NSF,

It's certainly better to learn not to order from overseas than to pay up and have it taken by customs.

Are you growing anything right now?

Hey makaveli8x8,

True. Thanks to NSF it looks like I've found someone local who can supply the small home edible/medicinal mushroom grower with most varieties one could want.

I also have most oysters and other things like Maitake etc. There's quite a few other ozzys around too that keep a culture collection going.

Try joining http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showforum=14 , it's about the most active of the Aussie mushroom sites.

Hang around long enough and your collection will just grow till it's almost unmaneagable:grin:

As for getting cultures in from os, i recieved a shitake 75 wedge from a member here by then doing the right thing. Custooms declaration stated 'Shitake mushroom culture' and it was delivered just fine.
Not saying this will always happen, but that one time made it 100% for me.

Could also be that they are prepared to allow cultures that are already here. i wouldn't like to try it with say..reishi for example, as i know from rumors that it's one that Aussie customs are on the lookout for.

@mycomush: no worries, i hope you are talking about punkin

@punkin: i recommended you to mycorush.

I've still got two bags of punkin's spawn that i desperately need to put to substrate but have been flat out.  I'm currently trying to fruit some old eryngii, whilst i have some more colonising, along with P pulmonarius and some shiitake.

Oh and if all goes well i'll also be innoccing with 4 cultures from tripsis.

Punkin,

It's been good talking with you. Looking forward to putting your Reishi spawn bag out to substrate this weekend.

I've joined the forum you mentioned a few days ago. Still waiting on an administrator to make my account active so I can start participating. I've now sent them an email to make sure I haven't fallen through the cracks.

NSF,

I sure was talking about Punkin. Thanks again for pointing me in his direction. Good luck with your grows! Keep us posted. Feel free to post up pictures in this thread if you like.

Is tripsis another fellow Australian shroomery member?

Yep, tripsis is another in Aus and he's also prepared to sell cultures.  I've just had some of his arrive and they are on agar now...should be rocking in a few days.

Cool. I might have to PM him and introduce myself.

One of the cool things that always happens when I start into something new is that I suddenly get to meet a whole set of cool people I would never have otherwise came in contact with. I've experienced this with martial arts and more recently when I started rock climbing.

Just posting in here so I can find this thread if I need to in future.

With incoming cultures/etc, is it an issue of quarantine, or of people labelling active speces as otherwise and thus getting in restricted/prohibited imports, and customs knowingtey can't tell the difference?

No worries mate. They are very slow to authorise accounts, keep hanging in there, took a couple of weeks and multiple emails if i recall my own registration.

Tripsis is a good guy.

Yes, i agree quarantine is there for a reason but the majority of hunted and eaten shrooms in australia all came from europe when our quarantine wasn't so good.

But commercially the big growers still get there spawn supplies from the US, coming through with permits.

Quarantine are really on the look out for reishi and H. Tessulatus i believe.  Maybe i have the last one muddled up with chicken of the woods.

Yeah, it's not like a bunch of mushrooms are not allowed to be imported. It seems more like you just need an official permit. So far this is the most information I could find from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) - http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon32/asp/ex_casecontent.asp?intNodeId=8908549&intCommodityId=27054&Types=none&WhichQuery=Go+to+full+text&intSearch=1&LogSessionID=0

On another note Punkin's Reishi package arrived today and I got stuck into making up the grow bags with sawdust, BRF, gypsum and water. I filled 3 bags with about 2.5kg of the mixture each. They're cooling now and I'm going to inoculate tomorrow.

I also plan on seeing if I can inoculate some Tasmanian Oak dowel I found at Bunnings, soaked overnight and pasteurized today. Just as an experiment.
