Invitro domination of trich... now what?
    #14292509 - 04/14/11 08:42 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have 3 jars inoc'ed from a traded syringe. Great growing Maz, BUT trich hitched a ride.
There are one or two tiny patches per jar.

Just for laughs, I let them go when I saw the dread green. Now the jars are almost 100% and the myc has covered the trich. In one jar, there is a fat pin right where a trich patch once was. Now I can't see it.

So, now what? Invitro fruiting? Or has contact with trich fucked the whole works?

if those jars were contaminated then they are for the bin.

Just because its now all white doesnt mean its still not contaminated. The white you are seeing is most likely mold mycelium grown from the spores you spoted earlier and not mushroom mycelium.

The green/blue you see that you know is mold is the colour of the spores the mold produces.

Let them fruit invitro, but I wouldn't birth the cakes out of the jar.  When the fruits are finished, they'll be fine to consume.

I would have tossed it long ago. What you do from here is at your own future grow's peril.

Best thing to salvage is to crack the jar open in a glovebox, remove a little myc from somewhere, and start working it on agar. Once you get a clean sample, create an LC from it and noc up some more jars.

Either your sterile technique is off or the syringe is contaminated. Both can be fixed with some time and work.

Its been a while since i;ve been here. RR is spot on, and i missed the part where trich hit late on.

Fruiting invitro would be the best option of you still want something out of the grow.

I had this happen to 2 jars once out of a batch once and just let them be. 1 of the jars pinned and produced a few fruits.

I had lots of jars going and didnt bother keeping it though.

Ok, I'll give a go at invitro fruiting. I was tempted to pull a g2g from these, or take a sample to LC since they're growing so well and the trich was all near/at the bottom of the jars. I kept putting it off, being focused on my fruiting APEs and getting clones and trying spore swabs on them.

I ignored them for about 2 weeks, and assumed they'd be tossed. When I saw that the trich had not grown at all since I last inspected the jars, the myc had covered the green, AND I've got several pins going... well, I can't just give up now, I thought. It's more a matter of principle for me; this critter has beaten the Dread Green, huge strands of rhizo-myc and some big pins. Throwing these jars out would feel like ordering the death of a Gladiator after he'd put up a fantastic fight.*

The green spots of trich started near where myc started, but never got much bigger than a dime. No airflow to spread their spore, I'm assuming. The guy I traded with says he's had problems with many of his syringes lately, and has seen lots of trich from the prints he's been traded.

This is the largest trich patch, and has been covered by a layer of myc, hence it's not too clear. I tried to darken the pic a little to make it easier to see the green underneath. In full normal light, it's harder to notice.

And here is that pin that's on top of what used to be trich....

*By the way, the whole "thumbs up" "thumbs down" thing you see in Roman-era movies: a total mixup, Hollywood is lying to you. In actual Arena combat, is a symbol of thrusting a sword up into the rib-cage, and  is a symbol of putting a sword back into the scabbard, putting it away. Hold a knife while making the   and I think the meanings are clear.

Ironic that nowdays  is good and  is bad. I blame the Christians; before they came into power, up and down were just directions. It was the ideas of Heaven and Hell being above and below that made the issue into "up is good and down is bad". So every time you see the Emperor give a  and the guy LIVES, Hollywood is lying. Go figure.

And that's our history lesson for the day.

I should hasten to mention that this is purely an academic discussion regarding how I should handle this situation. I *BY NO MEANS* advocate keeping contaminated jars. Most of the time it's a disaster. I've had my share in the beginning, I can tell you that much.

This seems to be a rare case that I may be able to get away with. The vigor of these pins is amazing to me, I've seen massive growth just since my first post the other day. Seeing pins at all was more of a shock than seeing the myc overtake the green.

Remember, do as RR says, not as Mathias does...
