A half-free morel year in Kentucky

Growing under elm & buckeye, in oak-hickory woods. These guys only fruit every so many years here, often the spring after a drought year.

Check out the badass homemade cowbell that I found in the woods, probably made by an ancestor over 120 years ago! It's in the bottom left of this group picture.

Then a young buddy, snapper surfing down the spring to the creek, & finally an old buddy, perhaps 45 years old!

*Edit, haha whoops, wrong box turtle, this one is the older guy, I've seen 80 year old turtles here!

Awesome finds man. I have only found about 20 this year, all under poplars.

Yeah, this is the land of turtles, those baby snappers are great (so cute just floating down the stream) the box turtles are the lords of these hills, besides humans they're the longest lived critters by a factor of 3!
Thanks guys. Happy spring to all!

The age is determined largely by counting the 'growth rings' or successive scutes on the top, rear section of the carapace. On close inspection, you can see fused scute rings on this turtle, each fused region may be many years, also indicating old age. Additionally, the wearing of the carapace by the elements leaves the turtle with shell topography, turtle shell ridges & hollows that echo the shape of our hills. The more pronounced 'erosion' indicates greater age.
