Curious about so-called Mycelium discharge/piss
    #1428968 - 04/04/03 03:53 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Just wondering about this stuff. I've read a few posts that mention it and wondered if anyone could clarify a few things. What is it? Why does it happen? What function does it serve, if any, for the mycelium? When can it happen? (meaning can it happen as early as first signs of growth or does it only/usually happen later on when colinization has gotten well under way) Is it a normal thing or is the mycelium "telling" you something about its condition when it discharges.

Lastly, what does it look like and what is the key to differentiating between discharge and contams? Anyone have any good pictures of mycelium discharge?

Usually happens in last stages of colonization.

Not sure really.... either too wet, result of gas escaping.. i really don't know.

it's sort of light brown, clear liquid, like gingerale. has no smell.

and does not seem to be a big problem with later fruiting etc..... just happens.

Yeah.. got a kick out of it when i found it.... fit perfectly!!.. pooops... hahaahahah..

But yes.. this mycelium piss happens, i've had it in jars, casings, I never removed it, i simply added a casing layer on top and let it absorb.

My guess is too much water in the substrate, but again, i don't know for sure.

In The Mushroom Cultivator it states
"Problem-Jar dicolored by yellowish droplets

Cause- Jar incubated for an overly long period of time, at higher then optimum temperatures, or both, causing the exudation of metabolites ("sweat") and the build up of fluids in which bacteria can thrive

Solution- Incubate at temperature and for period of time recommended for species being cultivated"

I don't know if that helps anyone, but I have been wondering about "mycellium piss" myself, that is just something I found.

Is this piss in the bottom of this jar? This one is incubating at 84F since 10 weeks and since I don't know if it's contamination or not, I just left it in the incubator.

Hmm I'm not positive, but I think it is only becasue some of my jars have that but it is on the side not the bottom. Have you flipped them upside down?

thanks poops... my friends just noticed some of that today and wondered whether or not the contamination fairy had visited them in the night.

It started on the bottom with few yellow spots. now it looks like that and starts to spread a little bit on the sides from the bottom. It's spreading like an organism that tries to extend its territory. I guess its not a good sign.

Yep, it was flipped during the last weeks (once upside-down, the cake slips a little bit so the bottom has something like 3-4 inches to *breath* but no mycellium grows over the yellow stuff...

I guess i'll just throw it out..

Oh it's actually on the cake substrate?
Not the mycellium?

If it is on the substrate I would throw it out. Actually I did, I had the same problem.

Hey,

Well no. The mycellium was all good looking when some yellow spots started to grow on the mycellium itself (at the bottom) and now looks like that.

i think the only way to iknow is birth the cake in a separate terrarium and see if the mycellium recovers .

Thats interesting. This stuff matchs the description that you all have mentioned. Doesnt seem to be spreading. It only seems to be happening on golden teachers and not PESA. I can get some pics up soon, see what you all think.

A friend explained to me that myc piss really never gives the impression of "growing" like a fungus does....it is a yellowish but otherwise very clear discharged liquid, often formed in drops or small areas where it "pools", and can sometimes even be seen to move within a jar if you hold the jar in a different direction, as you would expect a liquid to do when affected by gravity. It is harmless and can increase in amount, but if it appears to "grow", that is reason for concern.

Like all things in life .......matter is taken in and processed used to grow and produce offspring , hence all unused matter is turned into waste products and released . That is what the slightly yellowish watery looking stuff is that forms after a period of time in fully matured jars , and dying substrates . It is normal , but when gets excessive it starts to effect the mycelial network , but in general is no problemo .
PS ... That jar you showed ..... looks contaminated , not mycelium wastes .
How old is that jar ?
Does that yellow look fluid like , or does it appear to be attached to the mycelium network, and almost powdery ?

In agreement w Tripndicular....jar, at least from that picture, looks somewhat questionable. Verifying that the yellow is a separate liquid substance, and not "growing on" the myc is the key.
