I finally invested in a pressure cooker
I am currently soaking 3 cups of rye getting ready to inoc 3 qt jars via RR's grain prep tek with 1ml of spore solution into each jar from a Golden Teacher spore syringe.
I will keep pics updated as it gets goin.
4/15/11 10:27pm- pressure cooking
4/16/11 9:30am- inoc'd

the shorter your soak time is the longer you have to boil to get them nice and juicy.
but there is no rule that says: halve the soak time, double the boiling time or something.
i doubt you will get them right at the first time.
i think you have to do some tests before you achieve the right moisture content that way.
i recommend 24h.

I was reading about simmering the rye after the 10min boil for like 30mins. Why is that not mentioned in the RR vid? Do i gotta simmer them after the 10min boil? Or just rinse and jar and PC?
And a lot of the rye turned to a blue/green hue of color on the grains. Why is this? I can post pics but my cell is charging.

id soak for 24 , its just good practice ... you want to get all endospores germinated ...

Soaking has nothing to do with germinating endospores. In 24hrs the endospores have time to germinate, multiply and release more endospores than you started with.
Soaking is meant to soften up the shells of the rye grains so that they expand, rather than break, when you boil them. I find a shorter soak of about 4 hrs in warm water, followed by a roughly 10 min boil gives a good moisture level.

news to me ... i was under the impression that there were heat resistant bacterias in grains and that to effectively eliminate them you had to germinate them ... maybe i should come to the shroomery more often instead of every other year for updates on these things ...

So i took em out and started the boil because i was figurin 6 hours was good and boiled for like 4mins before i noticed a few grains bursted and i drained them and noticed they weren't hydrated enough so i put them back in the soak
Here is a pic of some of the grains bursted back in the soak

A few busted bye berries isn't going to hurt your jars any. Too many will make the rye clump together, but if you add gypsum to your jars, which you should, clumping is a non issue.
As far as soaking goes, from what I understand, it is not about germinating the endospores. It is more about hydrating the rye and the endospores. As someone else stated, within 24 hours, many of the bacterial spores will have germinated and begun their life cycle, ultimately making more endospores. If the endospores are wet, it will make PCing much more effective by enabling direct contact (and equilibrium as far as temperature goes) with the steam.

i soaked my seeds for 12-24 hours, then brought them to a rolling boil for 10 minutes stirring occasionally, then strained immediately and let all water evaporate off, even stirring them up in the colander to get all them moisture evaporated. did the TP test, which is basically to see if your grains are dry enough to put into jars.
take a piece of toilet paper, put a nice pinch of the rye berries on the TP for 15 seconds, then dumped them off. if they leave a wet spot, they arent dry enough. if they fall off and some stick, your perfect.
this is what i did to over 60 jars, they all germinated and have/had great mycelial growth. most of them got spawned to tubs recently, i need to finish the rest. i only had 2 contaminations in the entire batch...

IME, if your grains are a little on the wet side going into the jars, they will come out perfectly hydrated after PCing -they will remain bloated with water, but appear dry on the outside. I have found that they dry a little bit when PCing even if you do your best to insure no moisture is leaving the gasket of the PC.

In the end, fungus are resilient. They will eat just about anything, whether they be a little dry or wet.

The grains have been soaking for 14hours now and it looks like the grains have soaked up a good amount of water and swolen up a bit and some actually expanded and kinda bursted themselves because they got too soft but most of them seem like they need to soak longer. Tonight at 8pm im gonna do the boil for 10mins then strain and let steam dry on a flat surface.
But with the boiling for 10mins...everytime i do the boil at only like 4mins in it seems the grains start bursting and there is little white tips on all of them. Only a few mins into the boil too. How should i do the boil? Just boil it in its soaking water or add the grain to fresh boiling water?

put a bunch of grain in a pot, add water, then bring to a rolling boil for 10 minutes. stir every minute to prevent any grain on bottom to get too hot. just keep stirring as it boil.
your grains will be perfect.

I just boil until I see the first busted rye berries. That is usually around the 15 minute mark for me. I stir fairly often to prevent those berries on the bottom from becoming too hot.
Once you do it a few times, you will see what you are looking for.
