Printing, caps turned black;

Hey there,
I recently went to print 5 caps.
I cleaned the inside of my containers with alcohol, let them dry, placed sanitized foil in, put my caps on top, sealed the lids (all inside a glovebox). Three were started 30 hours ago, and two were started 12 hours ago. I went ahead and opened the 30 hour container to remove them and collect my prints, and I was greeted with soggy black mushroom caps and no prints. Worried about the others, I peaked in to see that the same thing had happened to them.

What could be the cause of all this extra moisture?
The caps still smell mushroomy, would it be safe to attempt drying and consuming them?
I've made prints before using this same method with no problems.

I don't seal them inside anything, I leave a crack under the upside down jar.

Yeah was the container air tight? is so you do need a bit of air flow to prevent rapid decomposition the air also drys the cap triggering spore release aswell

Alright, thank you both!
I will be sure to leave some room for air flow this time around.
Do you think it would still be safe to consume these? or are they considered "rotten"?

I dunno, man. Personally, I think I'd toss 'em. That sliminess is probably bacterial action. They probably wouldn't kill you after they dried... but it's gross. I would definitely toss them.

evaporation from the cap causes lots more spores to fall out.
where did you read that you need an airtight container to print?
it is incorrect and will cause your mushroom tissue to rot. like yours is doing.

i use this right here..
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-66qt-Wheeled-Underbed-Box-Teal-Thunder-Set-of-4/15136523
place on foil inside, then sit the lid on loosely, keeps spores from falling in with your prints, but allows plenty of room to breath
works like a champ for me..

I tried covering them with shot glasses (I read a tek saying to do that), and there was lots of condensation on the inside of the shot glasses. Luckily, I caught it before they got nasty. Now, I just put the caps on foil in a couple of these: http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_00902786000P?prdNo=8&blockNo=8&blockType=G8

Blegh! Sucks to hear, but I guess I'll have to. Thanks!

Many teks here on the forum suggest closing the lid on your container, or using a jar upside down. I never saw any mention of leaving a crack for them to breath.
There also wasn't anyone saying that these teks didn't work due to lack of air. I guess sometimes you just have to learn for yourself!
My next caps are in a container with the lid ajar.
Thanks for your input!

Uhmm.. not so much gooey/slimy like a slug. It felt like they had been soaked in water for a very long time.

Cool, cool!
Looks like it will hold a lot more spores than my Gladware containers, too!

Do you seal the lid shut on that, or is there enough air inside of it to let them print without rotting?

A little bit of both. The lid snaps on, but it's definitely not air tight. I do 6-8 per box, so every couple of times I go to fan and mist, I check on them and 1 or 2 are ready, so the air in the box never really gets stale, and the loose top prevents humidity from getting any higher than the surrounding room.

I use disposable agar plates for printing, and leave them all in the glovebox.
Day 1: Put square of foil in petri, cap on top of foil, lid on top of dish. Day 2: Remove lid, remove cap, replace lid. Day 3: Remove lid, remove print, fold and store.
The reason I wait forever is to give things time to dry. My dishes have little bumps on the inside of the lids so they can breathe through the sides. It's pretty much the perfect method for me. Also the dishes don't have to be sterile, I can put them through the dishwasher then alcohol rub them out before printing again.

if your putting jars or shotglasses over your caps for printing.
you should fold up a paper towel and put that under the edge of each glass to allow for evaporation

The key here is making sure whatever is covering your caps gets to breathe.

Thanks for all of your help guys!
The second set where I left the lids ajar worked perfectly. Very nice dark prints, too!

i know this is a bit old now but I use those small little plastic shoe boxes... I drill 6 1/4" holes in the top and cover those with micropore tape.

I just put them on the end of a long piece of foil and fold it loose over top of them to keep the dust off. Then I remove cap and give spores time to dry and seal the edges.
