format with gparted boot disc, reinstall xp and install avast antivirus and comodo firewall.  Back up any files you want to save first onto dvd's and then when you are gonna put them on the pc scan them with a squared.

Clean out the temp folder, Defrag the hard drive, uninstall useless programs(most important), run a virus scan, dl and run "spybot". That should help a crap ton

Depends on how much stuff he has. If you can fit the backup onto a flash drive then go for it.

Why would you format and not install Win7?  That sounds like a complete waste of time.

XP is outdated and frankly pretty shitty.

do you want to do things correctly?

Download gparted and imgburn.  Install imgburn and open it.  From there select the gparted iso and burn it to a cd.  insert the cd, turn the computer off, turn it on and it should go straight to gparted.  If it does not, play around with bios (ya know how when a computer first turns on you see it quickly flash Press some F key to go into options? Yeah, those are the bios)

From there delete the partition and click apply.  Then turn what you deleted into NTFS and apply again.  It's really not that hard and is the only way I would do it.

And, yes, you can use any drive you want as long as it stores it properly

If it's anything like my last computer... it will run slow.

Not every computer can run win7 happily.

Also why boot with gparted?.

Just insert the winXP disk and format that bitch. It's actually a good Idea to make a partition also.  Make a 30 gig partition for the c drive where windows will be. Install software and data to d: drive. Any problems down the road just format c and reinstall. no more need to back up, it's already on the d partition safe and sound.

Does he not have the CD? Good luck finding a pirated one that's not a virus
but yes, after you partition the drive you need to install the operating system

there is virii that can get past the windows "format".  Also, different partitions do not make them safe.  If you can possibly access it, it is not safe from virii.  Shit, as an example one time I forgot to take every computer off the network at my girlfriends house while installing windows 7 - not even 30 minutes after installing and no sketchy websites (just antivirus ones that i know are safe) did she have a virus (technically a worm).  Where'd it come from you say?  An old machine they use for printing documents

Get Win7...

Unless your computer is 7+ years old, it will run Win7 just fine...

Interesting, learn something new everyday.

Oh and I didn't mean a partition would keep data safe from a virus. I just meant that when the winXP 6-12 month reinstall ritual comes around, worrying about backing up data is not so much of a worry.
