Sentenced to stoning
Ruth Rosen Monday, March 31, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNLIKE MOST of us, 31-year-old Amina Lawal knows exactly how she's supposed to die. She will be buried neck-deep in the earth. Then, her executioners will throw stones at her head until she is declared dead.
This is the sentence she received Aug. 19, 2002, from an Islamic Shariah Court in the northern part of Nigeria.
Her crime? A divorced mother of two small children, Lawal bore a third child outside of marriage. According to Shariah law, a divorced woman commits adultery if she has sexual relations without having remarried.
As Lawal cradled her 8-month-old daughter, Wasila, the judge read her sentence out loud: "We uphold your conviction of death by stoning as prescribed by the Shariah. This judgment will be carried out as soon as your baby is weaned."
According to BBC News, the largely-male crowd in the courtroom reacted with shouts of "Allahu Akbar" (God is great). When the man she named as the father of the baby denied having sex with her, all charges were dropped against him. Lawal was led away in tears.
After the religious court handed down this decision, human rights groups appealed her case. Last week, however, the Shariah Appeals Court delayed its decision until June 3. The chief judge, it said, was ill. Many observers, however, believe the court postponed the case in order to avoid any political fallout before Nigeria's elections in April.
Amina Lawal may be among the most celebrated women ever condemned to death by Shariah law. Last October, Oprah Winfrey, in partnership with Amnesty International, launched a global campaign to support her case. Within a few months, 1.2 million people had either written or e-mailed the Nigerian government, asking it not to carry out the sentence.
Two weeks ago, the European Parliament condemned Lawal's sentence and urged the Nigerian government to halt all executions and to ban the death penalty. Within days, the House of Representatives passed a unanimous resolution denouncing stoning as a "gross violation of human rights" and asked President Bush to seek the suspension of such sentences. (Perhaps they should next take up our own death penalty.) The Costa Rican government has even offered Lawal and her three children political asylum.
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, a Christian, could pardon Lawal, but political observers believe he fears heightening tensions between Christians and Muslims in his country, which is already in turmoil.
Lawal's fate is yoked to these religious and political conflicts. In 2000, 12 states in northern Nigeria reintroduced Shariah Islamic law, which has stirred great violence and resulted in hundreds of deaths. Christian and Islamic groups are deeply divided about the benefits of "modernity." Not surprisingly, the clash between those who want to preserve 9th century law and those who are eager to enter the 21st century often focuses on women's proper role in society.
In Nigeria there is the further complication of what Akbar Ahmed, chair of Islamic Studies at American University, calls the "collapse of central government authority." The revival of Shariah law at the state level, in his view, has caused some women, like Lawal, to become "the classic example of a victim who falls through the cracks."
As she waits to learn her fate, Lawal, who has received no education, has little idea that her case, now widely publicized around the globe, has become a symbol of the clash between cultures in Nigeria. In response to the postponement, she said, "I've left everything to God. I do not feel anything right now. I know God's judgment is the best and will prevail."
If justice prevails, Lawal's fate will be decided by Nigeria's secular law, not in the Shariah Court.

Yes, what a peaceful religion.
-------------------- You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You can't completely blame the religion, Christianity has been guilty of bullshit like this in the past.
It's more... religion as a whole. Gotta love believers.

Did somebody try to change the subject a few posts up?
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

That's pretty sickening. For once I actually feel glad to live in this country...
I wonder how the executioners feel when they are throwing rocks at a woman's face?

whether you believe it's just or injust to give a convicted murderer a lethal injection, i think we'd all agree that stoning anyone in the face for 'adultery' is some fucked up shit. hmm... legislating religious morals and making a crime out of something that is not a crime and imposing draconian penalties for disobedience... nah... we wouldn't do that here in the west....

How can you compare a divorced woman who has a child out of wedlock to murderers? Also the Electric chair is no longer used!!!

nah, they still use the chair in some states. it's mostly lethal injection now though. i don't even know why they bother with complex, messy, painful methods like gas and electrecution anymore.

i don't see how stoning a woman for adultery is more insane or barbaric than sentencing a peaceful individual to 30 years of ass-poundings in a cage for cultivating illegal plants or fungi.

"personally i believe that every single convicted murderer should be put to death."
Yeah, especially the many wrongly convicted ones.
I don't think you can really compare the two. There is a valid case for execution of murderers and rapists, despite the fact that I disagree with it.
It's pretty straightforward in this case though, I think it's pretty obvious that nobody should be executed for having children out of wedlock.
