I think I figured out what makes people "old".

I'm 27 and I don't dwell on the subject, but it's natural to think about life and where you're at in it and what you're doing/how long you have left etc.
I really did some critical thinking today at work on what factor really starts you off on getting old...
I started thinking about it when this 18 year old dude asked me how old I was today, and I told him, 27, and he was like 'really? huh' and I Said "thought I Was older?" and he said "Nah, thought you were younger, like 23-24".
He probably thought that because I'm not married, I don't have kids, and I still party like a mad man... then I got to thinking... what really determines someone as being "old"? What critical milestone happens that starts you off as being old?
I think I figured it out....
First I thought it was bills, mortgage etc. but that doesn't work because there's tons of people who have mortgages and bills that don't seem "old".
Then I thought, it HAS to be marriage... Marriage is the soul killer in this equation, right?! Wrong, I know quite a few guys that are still in bands and party and shit with their wives.
So it has to be kids? Almost right, but not specifically just having a baby.... I analyzed two different couples that I know who both were really awesome and youthful people, one of the couples is no longer like that, they turned into everything they feared they would turn into when we were kids. So the lame couple has to be older than the awesome couple right? No, actually, the lame couple is younger than the other couple, the man is 30 and the wife is 28, the cool couple is 32 and 29 and they both have children and they both used to be awesome people, but only one still is.... so what happened?
The older couple just had their baby 2 years ago, the younger couple, well, she got knocked up when she was 22, and her kid is 5ish. I still party with the older couple who has the younger child and they don't really seem that different in the aspect of awesomeness... the other couple will not hang out with me anymore.
I figured it all out and pin pointed the exact moment when the woman in the lame couple got so lame and this is what makes people "old"...
She got super lame the very instant that her Child started going to public school and became very paranoid and worried and got super religious and just a normal old mother.
The minute your child, if or when you have one, goes to public school... it's official, you're "old".

I like that you are thinking of these sort of questions.
Age is a state of mind, just as time is a function of mind.
The body obviously undergoes wear and tear like a bitch, but even this is an obstacle to be transcended through perspective.

I agree completely... I was hanging out with a guy a couple years ago who was in his 60's, used to play in bands, ride his Harley around watching the grateful dead and shit and he never really stopped partying... I asked him if he had any kids or a wife or anything, he said he was divorced after 3 years of marriage back in the early 80's and never had any kids... his body may have been ragged and torn, but he didn't strike me as an "old" person.

Dude age is ALL in your head. I know people who are in their 50's and party like they're 21. It's all about how you feel. IMO when I get to the point where I just physically can't do the same things I used to do, that's when I'll consider myself "old".

I really think it has something to do with kids being at the age when they're in public school and living at home... I drink with my mom and her friends once in a great while at a cookout or gathering, and this woman there was taking shots with me, and she was like early 50's, my mom's age, and I was like 'damn, this lady kicks ass'... well I heard her make a comment that went something like "Hell yeah, it's time to start having fun again, my youngest daughter is finally moving out and going to college." She didn't party like that during the time when her kids were young enough to be in school K-12th grade.

I both agree and disagree. Obviously babies means impending doom. Some parents crap out sooner then others. For example I knew this really awesome lady who got lame the minute she found out she was knocked up. Stopped going out completely, pretty much turned born again (kind of an over exaggeration, but an appropriate statement compared to the lifestyle she used to have.) she compatibly turned into a nazi about people drining and smoking around her and the like the SECOND she found out that she had a parasite living inside of her. she even threatened some super harsh shit on her partner about his lifestyle in the process. Now, I'm not saying that it's totally lame to take care of yourself and the thing growing inside you but to oppress the folks you hang out with to that point where you call them out for being generally "wrong" about their lifestyle choices and telling them that they'll never amount to anything because they do this and this and this.... kinda lame.
so in regards to your analysis, I think people get lame once they get pregnant/have kids. They may not have outbreaks of lameness for a while though, however it is always impending. Kind of like Herpes outbreaks.

Ehh, I wouldn't use that definition for myself. I can't do some of the things I used to be able to do, e.g., I used to be able to walk up hills without getting asthmatic. (and I'm only 18)
I don't really agree with the public school thing either... I'm sure there are "coolyoung-seeming" parents with kids in public school.
By the way, my brother is turning 34 this year, and many people think he's in his early twenties. He doesn't even really "party" or anything (but he is a habitual drinker); he's just got this youthful energy about him.
I think I'll consider myself "old" when I stop enjoying life, or if I ever get sick of life.

word. When I was 20 I gave myself a tattoo on my ring finger of an arrow pointing in the 'off' direction.
Thats the only life long commitment I'll ever make.

eh...I guess I'm committed to staying healthy & active my whole life, so I will definitely be able to tell when my degrading physical health is due to age and not poor diet & lifestyle choices. That'll make me feel old...
I think that there will be certain things that happen (i.e having kids, getting married, kids graduating, etc) that will undoubtedly make me feel old, but idk...it's all about FEELING old. Age is a mental thing IMO

Good point, I know all of my degrading physical health is from sitting on my ass and eating shit. I started gaining weight right when I got a car.
And yeah, I definitely agree the majority of age is mental.

Here's a hypothetical question to ask yourself now, or when you get older:
If someone were to put your brain in a younger looking body, would people be convinced you were really that age?

I'm doomed then... I've been saying that since I Was a kid. haha, no, I get what you're saying...
my neighbors I used to have before they moved used to come over and bitch to me about the kids skateboarding in the alleyway like I really gave two shits... they kept trying to get me to talk to them because I wasn't too much older than they were and they could have possibly looked up to me and listened if I told them to be cool etc. (I was 25 and the kids were maybe 14-17)
After placating her for a couple months, I finally just had to tell her "Look, in all honesty ma'am, the kids skateboarding really doesn't bother me, and I think it's good they're getting exercise"
I did talk to the kids, I told them who was calling the police on them and shit and I let 'em know that I used to skate until I was about 22 and nit-picking bitches like her were the only reason I ever engaged in the art of vandalism. I even supplied their horrible skateboarding habit with some left-over lumber I had from a renovation project so they could build more ramps.
She was right about one thing... Turns out they did look up to me and think I was cool after all

to really answer this question, you have to define what traits are "old." that alone is a pretty difficult task.

i tried making sense of it, and then i realized i should be trying to make sense as to why i was even trying to make sense

It's all mentality man....Ive met 16 year olds who act old, boring and crotchety and 50 year olds who are lively like kids.
Many people Ive met on tour are the types whove never "grown up". They may be 50 years old but still wear a backwards baseball cap, a tie dye, have no job and do drugs all the time. To top it off they even call themselves "kids" and other "tour kids" that too.
On the flip side i know an 18 year old who has a kid, wife, settled down in a place, works 9-5, clean cut, etc.
Even on here ill see people who are my own age but complain about "kids". (vandago and rogue pixie come to mind) I still consider myself a kid though at heart.

There's a difference between not acting old and being a fucking loser. If you're 50 years old w/ no job and all you do is watch shows & do drugs then that's pretty pathetic. It's about not forgetting what made childhood awesome, and continuing to enjoy those things. You still gotta be responsible.
