So how do mushrooms use the lights during their fruiting stage?

They turn them on when they're trying to find their way to the bathroom at night.

This is a very interesting topic and the subject of some debate.
Intense light gives you darker caps and larger/denser fruits, especially the cap. I think it does something for potency too, but it's so hard to observe potency accurately that I won't stand by the claim.
Melanin is involved in the process somehow.
The debate is over whether the mushroom is deriving energy from light and using it in the construction of certain molecules or if the light is just a stimulant.
I lean to the former because I've read about fungi that derive energy from radiation, so it doesn't seem like a stretch at all to think these guys have evolved similar abilities.

i dunno about more shrooms, but light makes your existing caps bigger. so, not more shrooms, but likey more weight.

So if I left the lights on for longer I might get bigger fruit? Hasn't there been any studies on this?

No, they seem to grow during more during the dark cycle actually. You can only gain benefit from more light to a point.

Mushrooms are not plants and do not use photosynthesis. They breath oxygen. They use light as GPS to know in which direction to grow. I know most people would recommenda 6500k bulb 12 hrs on 12 hrs off.

not photsynthises, no, but i believe they do need the sun to metabolize calcium. however they use light, it has boosted my yield.

light is both an underestimated pinning trigger and growth tool ... as far as im concerned there isnt enough evidence going around to dispute this and i rely heavily upon it with exellent results ... but i guess youre gonna hear all kinds of the opposite ... do go ahead and feel free to disregard ...

It's really just a symantic argument.
If u define photosynthesis as a process that requires chlorophyll, then no, it's definitely not.
But if you define photosynthesis as any process which uses solar energy to assemble molecules, then yeah, that's what it is.

nope sorry.
every grown cubes with NO light?
they still grow straight up (opposite of gravity)
will they orient themselves in a position to absorb as much light as possible? often times, yes.

This is a topic that has been around for awhile. It is accepted that light is influential in PIN FORMATION. Other than that, is up for debate. It won't give you "bigger" fruits, (that is genetics). On the other hand, I've asked myself why it is that light influences the "rate of growth". I can only assume that when my lights are on, there is "trapped" energy in the form of heat that raises the temperature inside my monotubs and evaporates the surface moisture. That evaporated surface moisture remains inside the monotub in the form of "humidity". So, once the pins have formed the light helps maintain a high humidity ecosystem that the mushrooms need to mature. Just a thought

There's not much debate among those of us who have experimented with this for many years using all types of lights, little to no light, and various photoperiods. Proper lighting will result in denser, heavier fruits, so yes, that means they grow 'bigger'.
They'll also grow straight up with no light at all, so the disinformation from years past that they need light to "know which way to grow" was disproved decades ago. RR
