Are you happy?
#14284465 - 04/13/11 03:04 PM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

I mean, genuinely happy. Often times I feel really down or depressed but I don't understand why. Other times I feel very content. I don't really have any mood swings or anything like that, but some days I will wake up and feel very lethargic and just "meh..." It makes me think...I have basically everything I could ask for, so what is making me feel down?
What about you guys? Are you happy?

I've actually been rather depressed for around 3 years.. sucks when you realize all the problems you are having are self inflicted.

At the moment yes.
Weird though I was almost suicidal all winter... but theres no sun, nobody comes out and everyone is miserable in the UK winters.
Now the Suns here, we are having parties, BBQs are out, weeds growin in da green house and I'm off on holiday so super happy.
People just need goals - things to look forward to and to achieve.
Or become a zen master and enjoy the now ;-) I havn't mastered that one yet tho
Try taking a 10-20 mile hike everyday. I'll bet you $100,0000 it improves your depression.
I bet 10,000 years ago when mankind spent ALL his time surviving - depression didn't exist. Lol. Theres a lesson there...

Yea back in the day people didn't have time to be sad...
Haha, I know what you're saying. I wish I could go outside, but it's fuckin rainy... Maybe it's the weather in Seattle that makes me feel down. It'd be nice to wake up and see the sun.

Happiness.
I had it for 2010 to February 2011. My life was perfect.
I was happy. Satisfied. Had all I wanted, didn'T need more.
Then life shoved a few challenges in my face and I lost the grip I had on happiness.
Getting back there though

i'm happy a lot of the time because i've gotten good at bringing myself into the now. But even when you are very centered in the moment bad feelings can still come up but at least you're super open so that's the best way to deal with them.
Happiness is hard work

I'm the same way.
I would classify myself as generally happy though. It takes something really big to really get me down.

I remember watching jackass and they were in Seattle and Pontius said no wonder Kurt killed himself because of the shitty weather, raining all the time.
Weather's pretty bad here too but last week was nice and got burned a bit. Anytime it's sunny I try and make a point to go stand out in it for a solid five minutes but usually longer.

haha when the sun comes out I will go outside and bathe in it for at least an hour. I always make an effort to get outside and bike/walk around when it's sunny.

When you live by nihilism and "there's always room for improvement" it's hard to ever be satisfied.
At most I get my happiness from a hedonistic/epicurean POV/way of life... Besides all the worlds problems that are a tough nut to crack and all the social stigma, taboo and prejudice... wars and fights, yada yada blablabla
how could someone ever be genuinely happy.
Wirehead!
Maybe... someday?

i feel happy almost all the time. when I dont i feel very unhappy. i dont know where that leaves me in terms of overall happiness. i think the question is intrinsically impossible to answer with yes or no even though it seems to be formulated as a yes/no question. i am not particularly interested in being happy, though. the easiest route to happiness is suicide. if happiness is all you hope to achieve, well... you're just bullshitting around by staying alive

Hmm that's something that changed for me through the years. I remain baseline most of the time, extreme ups and downs is something long gone . Coping mechanisms because life happened ?
Not that I AM happy and see the joys in life and the beauty of it all. It's quite the journey with so many things to experience, our world fascinates me but everybody has their (superficial?) problems
And I agree morrow, you can't really answer with a blunt yes/no

Sometimes I am sometimes I am not... I'm probably more neutral than anything in the end.
I should be happy today because its my 20th birthday and all... but a friend of mine committed suicide yesterday

Or you could achieve happiness by making the necessary changes in your life?
Get those feel good chemicals flowing through your brain again, workout, eat better, take less/more drugs, drink less.
My drinking and subsequent hangovers are one of the main factors why I'm not happy all the time. Still working on cutting down, just noticed the two weeks I didn't drink I felt a lot better,I've just slipped back into the pints now. It should be said that even when I'm not that happy I'm still laughing at things though.
Laughter is great for it too as you all know.
Even forcing yourself to laugh can get things shaking again.

i've gone through a lot of shit in the past two years in particular and am recovering from a divorce in which i lost everything and am going back to school in order to start my life over for the second time. i wouldn't say i'm happy, but things are getting better and i know they'll be even better one day if i just tough it out.

See I usually feel pretty neutral, pretty satisfied. Other times I will feel as if my life is sort of pointless, and very bland. Why don't you want to be happy..? I think that by expecting to be happy you set yourself up not to be. I agree though it can't be answered by a yes/no...too many factors that contribute to happiness/sadness

see, I cut down drastically on my substance use and I started to feel better. Then, after a few months, I remembered why I smoke & drink I think that moderate substance use is definitely the best. There's a difference between using a substance to feel good, and feeling good and using a substance. You know what I'm saying? Let's be real, sober life gets pretty boring sometimes. It's nice to get trashed/baked when you feel like it.

I think there's more truth to this than almost anything else said in this thread.
Am I happy? I know I'm not UNhappy, but I'm not exactly bouncing off the walls. I try to keep myself ingrained in my hobbies, it gives me something to think about. I think boredom is the cause of most peoples unhappiness today, and they're only bored because [hippyrant] most of our generation has been raised on TV and vidya games, and we feel like our stimulus has to come from outside for some reason. People don't have imaginations anymore, people don't like thinking "what if," people just don't like being people anymore. [/hippyrant]
So, I brew beer, I grow mushrooms, I ride my bike and I go to work. When I have a free moment, I write. Outside of that, I don't have time to be unhappy. I mean, I can, but I've got all this shit to do, sitting around moping about how my life sucks doesn't get jars nocced up or beer bottled.
Kinda weird, really.

too bad you don't know me I give'em away for free to my buds.
I took too many shrooms in too short a period of time, and now before I dose I get such bad anxiety that I have to sit and meditate for about 30 minutes to calm myself down enough to dose. Then, EVERY time, I think to myself "wow...why was I worried"
anyway, I agree that unhappiness stems at least partly from boredom. Whenever I get a chunk of time off I start to feel a little useless by the end

I'm happier than I've been in many years, right up until my mind distracts me with, "Wouldn't a self-sustaining house on a couple dozen acres be great?" Then, shortly after indulging in the fantasy, I'm back to the cycle of, "Once I get ________, then I'll be happy! I gotta go make more money!"
I'm getting better at seeing the pattern and breaking it,

I do exactly the same as you but more... I still get bored . My brain never takes a break it seems. I don't think the bottling fascinates you that much that you just put up a bland... or don't you think?
But other then that you're completely right, external stimuli is what most people expect these days.

Hehe yeah you're right, occupying your time with anything that will deliver something in the future is great. It's a great hobby by the way, i've distilled here and there in a lab. I decided to spend this weeks money on getting started for real though.
Well it's either that or other creations of chemical substances

I feel like this is all people do their whole lives...chase this dream of having more and more and more, but what happens once you get everything you ever wanted? True happiness doesn't come from having things. Our society has brainwashed people into thinking that money & things are all you need

I don't actually distill, although I'd like to. Hell, I've got half the equipment I'd need already. I make beer at home instead, because I like beer more. Not much of a drinker, weirdly enough. I do like a brew now and again though.

I just got fired... Very unhappy at the moment.
And no weed/jwh, no beer, no drugs.. Well i have a couple grams of mushrooms, but that won't help right now. I'm numb and i want to feel more numb. God damn it.

Man, idk if being an adult means life has to suck...
I'm an adult and my life is pretty smooth sailing as we speak. I have a good job, a bright future, enough $$ to last a little while. Problems I foresee are moving out of my dad's house. I have to have surgery on my shoulder in may that will put me out of work until the end of August
I can't move out until after that and the 3 months of no working are going to drive me FUCKING INSANE

I'm not saying life sucking is part of being an adult. I'm saying feeling lost is. It's natural. You'll figure stuff out eventually, and be glad you did.
Jesus, I'm old now.
