1st Post :) Hello + Questions *new PINS*
    #14283457 - 04/13/11 01:44 PM (10 years, 30 days ago)

Hello

After lurking on here for about 2 months I decided to register as ive started a few projects from information gathered on here and have come to a point where I have some questions, and could maybe use some advice as this is my first time.  I have done BRF cakes, and tried a few LC, one of which appears to be working. Anyways on to the fun.

I made a modified SGFC, basically just a smaller version of the RR one because I ended up with only 1 good cake.

The FC holds humidity, and I drilled many holes along with making sure the room gets fresh air frequently.  Mist 4 times daily, fan 6. Room has been cold lately around 63f. My cake was dunked for 24 hrs and rolled in dry verm.

My cake has been in the FC for 10 days and so far there are no pins.  I let the cake consolidate about 8 days after 100%. I know it can take up untill 2 weeks but could there be an issue. I use indirect sunlight and direct sunglight for about 1hr.

Any suggestions guys?

Now about my LC.http://

http://http://

How does my LC look? How much longer should I wait before making a test jar.  This is a honey LC, hence the particles.

thank for reading this long post. Great forum

Thanks for commenting!

About the LC. It was actually that cloudy when it was first created. i used an all natural honey that was a bit cloudy.

Looking good

Looks like you did your research pretty good.
I would personally take the cakes off the perlite
and onto some foil or something.

The LC is in the air until you shoot up a test jar.

Should my LC get larger or thicker first before I try using it?

Thanks for the advice, I did actually put the cake on a jar lid but i think it may have sunk into the perlite so you cant see it.

I did read a lot about this first but really watching those RR videos a good 2-3 times and taking some notes to guide me i was fine.

It's hard to tell if you should make a test jar yet or not, but if there's enough in there I say go for it.

As far as honey lc's are concerned, I like to use as little honey as possible to avoid cloudiness. Usually just one small drop will do, don't even squeeze it. I've read you can never really use too little honey, but you can definitely use too much. Here's a couple honey lc's I made with just a tiny drop of honey:

Good luck with your grow!

yea, i dont see anything under that cake at all, if you say it's there then I guess you would know but it worried me too.

Also, I see nothing in your LC jar to help break up the LC. I don't know if you're using a marinade injector or what but most people either use a stir bar in conjunction with a stir plate, or they just sterilize a few marbles and put those in their LC jars to help break up the tissue. It will be very hard getting the tissue into a needle if you don't break it up first.

I suggest making some more cakes and trying out that LC, though letting it go a bit more won't hurt it if you are not sure it's done. Shaking the LC up with the marble in it helps it to colonize more of the liquid faster.

To test the LC shoot into 1 cake and wait 5 days. If in 5 days you see healthy mycellium growth, it's safe to assume that the LC is healthy and good to go. If not, you've only wasted one small cake.

Another idea I would like to present to you is that instead of tailoring a 10 dollar tub for one cake, you could have used a 2 or 3 liter bottle, or a big tub that pretzels come in, with the same hole layout and while using much less perlite.

I think that's all i got for u right now. hope it helped.

I neglected to put a marble or glass in my LC. Honestly i have no idea how im going to get the LC out. I dont have a still air box. and i only have the tiny needle that my spores came in.

I guess what i need to know is how suck that stuff out without contaminating it.

hmmm sounds like you're screwed man, don't even have a glovebox? Make one.

Anyway, you could get a marinade injector, sterilize it or at least the needle part, and suck up some liquid. Then shoot that liquid into the LC. Even though I use stir plate+stir bars, I still do this a couple times to help break up any remaining big chunks of myc.
And I'm using a 14 gauge needle, I'm guessing you're using 16.

What's your LC jar lid like anyway? Self healing injector port? it may be too small for the marinade needle i know mine would be.

I have a tiny hole only in my lid covered with polyfill.  So there is no way i can get that myc out without breaking it up?

You can suck up some of the LC and squirt it back into the jar to try and break up the myc. If you have a bigger gauge needle it wont be as bad.

Theoretically, you could just dump it into a jar or something but that's just not a very good idea. It really should be broken up to fit into your needle.

So, next time: get some marbles.

Just open it in a very very clean room and use the syringe needle to stir it up. Or make a glovebox - mine only cost $4 to make.

Any chance you could share some info on a cheap glove box design?

Direct sunlight for an hour might be too much.

I used indirect light and everyday I would mist my sgfc lightly and throw it in the sun for 10-20 minutes.
Even that I read was a little more than I was suppose too.

Also, think about buying a cfl 6500k bulb.
I now use indirect sunlight and the bulb. Works really well (Indirect worked well too, just my mushies grew towards the window and growth only happened on the one side of the cake facing the window.

Looks Good!

Here's mine almost as cheap as you can get.
Made the holes with the bottom of a coffee can.

Here's mine:

It's pretty ghetto in the picture, I have since upgraded the double sided tape you see holding the viewing plastic on to hot glue. I cut out the top and arm holes with a wood burning pen, then made some tyvek sleeves with ponytail holders for elastic.

Well I just got back from the store, picked up a nice transparent box.

This might seem like a silly question, but what do you use to cut your holes?

I use a woodburning pen, you can get them at Michael's pretty cheap, and they work soooo well. You can use scissors too, but that sucks. Do a search... I know there are other ways to do it besides those.

I heated up the bottom of a coffee can or nesquick can on the stove and just pressed it up against the plastic.

I like your tyvek sleeves might try that out.
