SGFC holes
    #14283092 - 04/13/11 10:27 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Of course the bit that I am missing in my set is the 1/4.  I have a 3/16 and a 1/8.  I know that the size of the holes are very important as the right size allows a good amount of airflow while not allowing humidity to escape.  So which size should I go with?  Should I make them a bit smaller or a bit larger than normal?  Anyone have any experience with different sizes?  If I go with the 1/8 drill bit, like I think I am going to, should I make more holes than normal?

3/16 is only 1/16 smaller than 1/4, go with that
and make regular holes.

Go buy a 1/4" bit.

You can use the 3/16 man its fine. I used it and I didn't even drill more than the usual amount. Its dry in my basement so I put mine 2 1/2 inches apart and the humidity is perfect

Thanks guys.  Yeah, that's the one I meant to say I was planning on using.  As far as going to buy one... I live like 30 minutes out from any kind of Lowes, Home Depot, or hardware store.  If I can get by with a 3/16 and not make an hour trip for that bit, I would be happy.  Thanks for all the quick responses though guys.

you'll probably get results with that size, but unfortunately like doc says in this hobby you gotta just learn to do things right the first time.

You could make a smaller hole, then try to i dont know, heat something up and make each one a little bigger....I've never tried smaller holes.

Let us know how it goes for you though!

1/4 inch drill bit is like 3$ tops almost anywhere. id say buy the bit and do it right the first time.

I think I ended up using a 7/32 bit, as the 1/4 bit had not been replaced yet (from breaking)... No problems with FAE; but my SGFC is HUGE...  Was something just shy of 400 holes, iirc.  Would have been over 400, if I drilled the four corners of the walls.

you know, if i remember correctly, it was RR that said a 1/8 inch hole is only 1/4 the area of a 1/4 inch hole. with that in mind, it would take 4 1/8 inch holes to get the same air flow as 1 1/4 inch hole.

now, mind you, this is just from memory. maybe he'll pop in and tell me i'm off my rocker and clear everything up, but i think i'm remembering correctly.

my verdict, buy a 1/4 inch bit. you need one anyways right? i mean, your missing it, so you might as well replace it.

You are correct!

Surface area of a circle is calculated as {pie}R{squared}... "R" being the radius of the circle. Radius being half the distance of the diameter...{pie} roughly equals 3.14159265358979 (that's all I have memorized, but it is an indefinite number in actuality).

Let us use a 6mm and a 12mm diameter holes for comparison...

6mm diameter equates to a 3mm radius.  {pie} x 3{squared} = 28.27 (rounded)

12mm diameter equates to a 6mm radius.  {pie} x 6{squared} = 113.10 (rounded)

113.10/28.27 = 4.00

Thus; we can see that twice the diameter equates to four times the surface...  Transversely; a diameter half the size of another equates to one-fourth the surface.
