Rye jars too dry for any hope of colonisation?

My PC finally came in, so I figured there was nothing better to do than get a few quart LCs going and try my hand at grain at the same time.
I made up 5 quart jars of rye according to RRs procedure; soaked them for 24 hours in weak coffee, boiled them for 5 or so minutes, tossed them until all the surface moisture had steamed off, then loaded the jars, covered the lids with foil and PCd them for 2 hours.
One of the jars I inoculated with LC, not syringe. it colonised a littls after only two days, but the next day hadn't made any progress. Looking at them closely, I think the grains are too dry, at least on the outside, and I've got no idea how it happened or whether these jars are salvageable:

Any thoughts?

Looks fine, i would try to be patient and let it do its thing. If it is too dry you can go through the trouble of injecting some sterile water. I believe m00nshine has a tek on how to do that.

Righto, cheers guys.
I wasn't sure whether I'd somehow managed to boil the moisture out when PCing it or something.

Those grains look dried out to me, whats your colonization temps, are the jars next to anything too hot? I hadt this problem in the winter, caused by fluctuating temperature where the jars were placed.
If your grain was prepared properly this can be the only cause.
Did you give them a good shake whilst drying the grains ala RR tek?
Probably will still colonize give it a few more days and give it a shake to maybe distribute the dryer/wetter grains. I've had jars like that before and they always get there in the end.

Thanks fractal. They're sitting in a cupboard, nothing hot nearby. Temps are in the low 70s. I stood there tossing the grains until steam stopped coming off them.
The only thing I can think of is that I had ~3" of grain in the pot, and 3" of water above the top of the grains (undersized my pot apparently). But I don't know how that would make a difference.

getting rye just right takes a bitta practice, you'll have it down given a few more runs. depending on weather your inoculating with an LC or wedge should determine how "dry" your grain is.
For example i let my rye shake real dry for maybe 30 mins no steam at all left or surface moisture, i then knocked a full 10cc of LC in to the jar (quart), with no excess moisture.
Although this is excessive you get the general idea of how the moistre differs.
A few mins shaking either way can drastically alter your moisture level.
Experience and your eye will tell you when its just right.
If im inoculating. with wedge i dont let it go too dry.
Good luck, the rye is the king!

your grain isnt too far off, dont feel too bad. your jars will colonize just fine, if anything they may take a little longer. keep up the good work man, you'll get it eventually

Looks a little dry but fine.
I made my most recent batch up of rye that'd been allowed to dry especially well. I'm very pleased with it, much moreso than when I made my batches even a pinch too wet.
3 degrees too dry > 1 degree too wet imo
