pf cake question
    #14281251 - 04/13/11 12:56 AM (10 years, 29 days ago)

I recently attempted my first grow a few weeks back, and my cakes are not even close to becoming fully colonized. About four days ago i noticed them starting to colonize and then within a few days i have a white section about the size of a half dollar piece and another about the size of a nickle in one jar, another has a section about the size of a nickle as well and the other jar has nothing going on. the ones that are showing haven't increased noticeably since the little growth spurt that took place.

Is This normal? i dont remember the exact date i made them but i know its been longer than two weeks.

i think i used a bit bigger jar than half pint not real sure so i know it will take longer to fully colonize but i haven't really been seeing much. is there something i could change to help growth?

Also have a question about the fruiting chamber i should use. I was going to use a clear bin and drill holes in it like the pf tek video showed but afraid to drill too many holes. is this still a sufficent technique?

Update 4/21/11

One of my jars seems to be colonizing at a faster rate now , but i also noticed that the colonized sections seems to have shrunk inwards in a sense that u can tell its not touching glass, and theres moisture built up on the glass now. is this normal?

It takes a while sometimes.
Deff when your only using spores.

As long as they are white let them go.

First, what is the temp? is the water content in the jars beneficial to the mycelium? What tek are you using? What species are you attempting to grow?

More likely than not, the mycelium is trying to grow within the substrate as well. Do not worry, it may take up to a month for full colonization. I do say though to keep your temp around 78.

As for your FC, drill a few holes on top of the FC and near the bottom to provide good FAE. Apply medical tape to the holes to allow FAE and to keep contaminants and parasites (flies & gnats) away from your hard work.

And pics would really help!

It's multispore it could take two weeks or a month its a roll of the dice so try to be patient and they will colonise as for your fruiting chamber drill holes every two inches all six sides 1/4 inch holes

Well i have some pics but thier off a camera phone, so they wont be that great but you can get an idea.

The 3 larger jars have a penis envy strain and there the ones that have the most visible colonaziation. Im not sure when i created them as i didnt write down the date.

The smaller jars contain the B  strain and were created on 4/8, one jar shows signs of colonization but nothing significant.

These are in a large walk in closet sitting on a shelf, in one of the pics youll see the top on but four holes poked in the lid to allow gas exchange.

I used the pf tek videos by road kill and followed them as percisly as possible. I know i should be patient but the big jars have been sitting for at least 3 weeks with only two showing signs.

I have read other articles where people have signs within the first week or so and soon after are close to full colonization. I know it wont be the same based on different varibles.

Thinking maybe something may not be right. I have seen a few times where people mentioned the videos were a little out of date so is thier something i could change to help colonization happen a little faster?

thanks for any input and sorry if people have asked similar things just trying to make sure im doing things properly.

Temp varies in my house from 75 - 77, maybe a degree or two warmer in the closet

If they dont fully colonize, would it be possible to some how utilize the sections that are colonized to some how maybe just get a couple mushrooms, i would really be stoked on even seeing one grow since this is my first attempt.

You need to triangulate your spread going from side to side along the glass. It makes a HUGE different in the colonization times. This is why liquid cultures are so popular (grains only). They get an even wide spread distribution and thus take less time.

I can't tell very well but it kind of looks packed? What was your mixture ratio that you put in there?

its actually not packed at all, you can't see it in the pics but its actually quite loose looking. I used the exact amounts the videos showed me so i know i had it right and threw what was left over away as i only made a few jars to test out.

You can still use them if the colonize say atleast 85% just rinse off the uncolonized substrate try to get it all then dunk and roll then into the fruiting chamber
